Bye-bye Desktop, Hello Metro! Microsoft Ditches Standard Windows Look and Feel

Posted July 10, 2012 11:44 AM

From MailOnline.com:

Gone is the Start Menu. Gone is the Desktop. Instead, applications, widgets and social network updates appear in the form of a mosaic of tiles. Everything is touch-friendly, as you swipe across screens to access more tiles and more tiles. This is the new version of Windows, and it is almost ready for prime-time, with Microsoft preparing Windows 8 for launch in October. Windows fans may lament their loss, but Microsoft has seen the future, and it is all about touch.

I;m not sure if they're going to remove it for the official launch or not, but for the beta, you can change the UI to look identical to windows 7. The meat and bones of the OS running in the background intrigues me enough to buy windows 8 this upcoming year, and the pricetag (I believe they said $40 for an upgrade) is cheap enough that I won't feel like it's money wasted to at least give it a go.

Who knows, with a little modding, maybe it'll even be more efficient than 7! Only time will tell!

Exactly!
$40 and several hours re-cofiguring it and you'll eventually get it working exactly how you want it...
Which is exactly how you have it working now! Only now after 2 hours you'll be closer to that heart attack.
My glass is full, and I'd rather be drinking from it or out in my workshop making bows than messing with another unfinished offering from MS.

I always end up spending way too much time configuring my desktop anyways

This isn't my current layout, but it's pretty close to what I've got after I've tampered with the UI:

Close to what I have

Boy I agree with that!

I'm just getting the hang of playing with a mouse... I don't get as much practice as you do!

Still chasing Apple, I guess. Trying to make Win8 look like an iPad.

So the next Vista type disaster is waiting in the wings.

I am (like most people around the world using Windows) still using WinXP. When it no longer does what I want, I will be changing to a version of Linux, probably Ubuntu, but I am not fixed on any single version at this time.

Change merely for the sake of "change" is stupid, wasteful, un-necessary and un-wanted (by me!)...all trademarks of M/S over the years.
