Fred Flintstone Would Love This Weird Pedal-Less 'Running' Bike

Posted August 27, 2012 2:35 PM

From DVICE:

Back in the stone age, Fred Flintstone would drive his car along using his feet, so why not get rid of a bike's pedals and gears and drive it along in the same way? The Fliz Bike concept from Germany does just that, and even has you hang your body from the frame in a harness.

It's a good thing we old timers are around to tell the younger folks that a two wheeled contraption without pedals is old news.

Wiki article about a hobby horse, or laufmaschine.

Looks more like an art project to me.

No gearing at all, and what happens if you misstep and hit the rear wheel?

<ouch>

Certainly is not a vehicle where Bermuda shorts would be appropriate!

<ouch> would be the least of it!

Hmmmm..... Almost a bicycle:

that probably maxes out at less than 1/2 the speed of most bicycles;

.

that prevents the rider from sitting more upright to peer over traffic or rest his/her back;

.

that surely makes slight uphill grades a challenge and steep uphill grades next to impossible;

.

that positions the riders head between two stiff structural members like a bottle cap in a bottle opener;

.

that requires the rider to be strapped into place, lest the rider selfishly attempt to avoid whatever horror this death trap is approaching.

.

.

Well, I'm not sure it is for me, but perhaps I can think of some people who deserve this as a present.

I just can't imagine supporting my entire body weight with a crotch sling.

Where are the foot rests?

The world is your foot rest.

I am guessing you wouldn't want to take your feet of the ground for fear of losing your balance (which in this design is quite different from a standard bicycle when you think about it).

By far, the stupidest contraption I've seen in a very long time.

The Fliz Bike concept has been entered for a James Dyson design award. We'll know in about two days whether they won.

I guess you don't hold much hope of them winning, given the very high standard of some of the former winners and runners-up I would agree.

Still a good moving art project thou (for what it's worth).

A far stupider device...

"Oooo, look at me! I'm so very important! Not only do I annoy the public with my private conversation using my handheld, people will now think I'm nuts because I'm talking to myself using my handsfree! Yay!"

I saw a 60+ woman wearing one the other day. Sheeple. <Puke>

Person waiting in Line says to the guy in front of him: "What did you say?"

Guy with stupid device: "I'm on the phone!"

Person waiting in Line says to the guy in front of him: "Jack-Ass!"

So, does this clip onto your crotch, or what?

Not until they come out with a vibrating version. Can you imagine? People not rushing to answer the phone!

I am waiting for the versions with built-in view screens (yea they are on their way in the near future).

Not only will you get to be annoyed by users but you will also have them walking in to you if you are not careful.

Progress can be painful, but no need to worry too much unless people start muttering "Where is sarah connor?", "We are the borg" or "Windows has experienced an unexpected problem please reboot me".

I think that they just need a more appropriate name; my suggestion is that they rearrange the letters to spell FIZL.

A rare moment when I am left speachless by the sheer stupidity of the exercise.

I can't tell if there's rear brakes, but a forward flipping face-plant on this contraption looks particularly problematic.
