Meet The Most Brilliantly Shiny Natural Object on Earth

Posted September 11, 2012 12:23 PM

From DVICE:

Isn't this pretty? It's a little fruity berry type thing called Pollia condensata, from Africa, and it's the shiniest thing on the planet. We're talking "shiny" like Firefly shiny: something brilliant and awesome and sparkly that lasts forever, because there's no actual pigment going on in there. The color is structural, like a butterfly wing, and will never ever fade.

"We're talking 'shiny' like Firefly shiny..."

Fireflies are 'shiny'? How so? They're not 'shiny' at all. Fireflies emit light, generate their own. Bioluminescence. 'Shiny' is a specular property; light is reflected from a shiny surface, not emitted. In a darkened room you won't see 'shiny', but you can see fireflies.

"...brilliant and awesome and sparkly that lasts forever?"

Tune in, turn on, drop out.

How so? Without light there's nothing to reflect. These berries don't generate their own light.

Time for a siesta, yes? After all, 60% of all on-the-job injuries in the United States occur within the first hour after lunch, so there you go!

That's why I try to sleep at least 8 hours a shift and watch TV or play around on the computer for as much of the remaining four as I can.

We have been talking about getting a second person now to help me out. Safety first you know.

Does the sparkly last forever when the plant dies?
