Increasing Fossil-Fuel Power by 40% With a Green, Clean Tornado Turbocharger

Posted December 19, 2012 9:48 AM

From ExtremeTech:

Peter Thiel, the billionaire co-founder of PayPal and now a venture capitalist and philanthropist, has decided that harnessing tornadoes is the future of green energy production. In a 500-megawatt fossil-fuel power station, as much as 1000 megawatts of energy is wasted as heat. Controlled tornadoes could produce 200 megawatts of green electricity from that waste heat, almost for free. Breakout Labs, part of the Thiel Foundation that offers grants to bleeding-edge technologies that are a little too wacky for commercial or governmental investment, has given $300,000 to AVEtec. AVEtec (AVE = Atmospheric Vortex Engine), run by Canadian entrepreneur Louis Michaud, is trying to develop a tornado-power add-on for conventional fossil-fuel power stations. This isn't as crazy as it sounds.

They will be sued by kennyaab6 for this infringement.

An interesting development to watch but I seem to remember seeing something like this before under development (and this was even before kennyaab6).

Here it is, the Cyclone waste heat engine I previously posted about on CR4 in 2008.

This isn't very clear, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. (Not that Wiki is a very reliable source, but let's pretend it is for now.)

According to Wiki, fossile fuel power stations are typically 33 percent efficient. So that's where the numbers come from. They put 1500 MW of energy in and get 500 MW of useable energy out, with about 1000 MW of the energy being wasted as unuseable heat.

Wikie goes on to say that a gas turbine system using heat recovered to generate steam and thus get more power achieves 60 percent efficiency. So that would be 1500 MW in, 900 MW useable energy out, and 600 MW of waste energy. So this turbine system recovers 400 MW, or twice the recovery of the 'Tornado' system. -- Though I suppose the gas turbine system is limited to certain types of power stations.

Cool!!!

I've been hoping this guy would get some funding. I want it to work.

Maybe the US government can cop a clue. Funding technology instead of building businesses for political donors.

Looks like it's a system that uses the rising hot air from the chimmney to suck in cold ground level air and so spin a turbine.

I suspect Mr Carnot will have something to say about that.

I think is for hot air from the cooling towers, in some plants we had to re-heat the gases to give them sufficient energy to clear the chimneys because they had become cooled while going through the Particulate and SO2 Removal systems.
