Princess Leia Hologram Could Become Reality

Posted March 21, 2013 7:59 AM

From The Guardian:

May the force be with you … the Princess Leia hologram in Star Wars. Similar technology could soon be available on smartphones

Scientists have created a glasses-free, 3D display that could mimic the famous hologram projection of Princess Leia in the original 1977 Star Wars film.

The display is small and light enough to work on mobile phones, and produces images that appear in 3D even when viewed from different angles, the scientists said.

To make the device, researchers at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto, California, built a transparent screen with tiny light emitting diodes (LEDs) around the edges. Light rays sent towards the centre encounter pixels that steer the light out of the screen in different directions.

Through careful control of the light, the device sends slightly different images to each eye, which are combined in the brain into a 3D object.

Sort-of-like a 3-D version of Skype (usual disclaimer) then?

The link below has a video clip that is similar to one I saw on the National Geographic Channel in 2012. Once there you can click on the "Download Movie Here" (or the Aerial 3D movie clip) and you will see a demonstration that is pretty amazing. It's in the early stages but it does not require a screen of any kind to display the 3D effect on.

Here's a direct link the video if you want to skip the site altogether:

Enjoy.

You might also like reading up on using lasers for the purpose of optical trapping or "Optical Tweezers". There's some good information about this out there. Using a laser to trap/hold particles. See the attached video for a good example of what this is all about. The first time I saw youtube videos of this I was skeptical but I have done this a few times with one of my lasers. It does work but it may take a few tries.

Have fun trying it.
