Airline Passengers May Soon Be Able to Use Electronics During Takeoff and Landing

Posted March 24, 2013 4:33 PM

From Mashable:

For any airline passenger who has been annoyed during takeoff and landing when told to power down electronics, here's some great news: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) may only require you to put some gadgets such as e-readers and laptops in "airplane mode" during takeoffs and landings - maybe as soon as next year.

According to The New York Times, the FAA has been looking into the use of electronics on planes, and might ease up on the strict rules to shut them down during certain times. However, don't get too excited. This wouldn't apply to cellphones, the report said.

The airlines want you to turn off your gizmos so you'll pay attention to the safety demo and any other announcements the flight crew makes. Also, if there's trouble during takeoff or landing, they don't want everyone scrambling to save / discard / tripping over all that crap.

If you're so delicately precious that you can't unplug for those few moments of your trip, then you should be kept cotton-wrapped in a fortified bunker, with your brain permanetnly wired to the info grid and avoid travel altogether.

Hell, with the amount of room you have on a plane.......... even on a 3 hour flight, you better off resting up, maybe you could do your expense report......... but that guy next to me thats on the computer and trying to use his time efficiently, better not use any of my 22 some odd inches by doing it on his 17" laptop........ especially if he also plays Santa Claus during the holiday season......

iPad, may be different, its not so intrusive to your fellow passengers, can't do nothing about the overweight Santa though, except asking for a different seating arangement........

Exactly....or having that stuff flying about the cabin and possibly hitting other travelers in the head.

Forget this, as someone who travels fairly frequently can we perhaps concentrate on security measures to get on the plane in the first place in a timely and dignified way.

Taking off our shoes every time we go through security (for example, and for international flights this can be a LOT of security checkpoints) is not going to save people, preventing security personnel from saying 'take off your shoes' a bazillion times a day until they snap and start shooting up the airport is more likely.

Ok, that may have been a bit harsh, but are some of the increased security measures actually accomplishing anything.

I think that depends on the airport.

I fly just last week, brought on my laptop as a carry-on............ the only delay I had was in one of the pockets I had a small screw driver for service that I missed and did not remove, that was my fault....... it was small enough to initially pass (I think under 6 or 7 inch's) but then my spare battery and such looked suspicious under the x-ray and was flagged.

Well when I got a pat down, they were courteous. I think it was in the Denver Airport.......

But I take you don't go through the airport dressed like these,..... do you? ;)

I keep forgetting to take my USB swiss army knife off my key chain, and I have crashed the automated kiosks a number of times and even caused a security scare when it misprinted my ticket twice when i tried to board the plane.

On the plus side I once managed to get through LA airport in 15 minutes flat with about 50 others to catch an international flight due to a connecting flight delay (generator failure in mid air) and it is fun to run through the airport with TSA security officers escorting you (and in some cases yelling at me to slow down). Just like a VIP.

Jack - They needed the exercise anyway.

Ha,

I recall, doing an OJ Simson Hertz Commercial routine through O'Hare.........

Only difference was, I was lugging allot of crap and I did not have a smile on my face........ And at the time, I didn't need the exercise....... like I do now
