Cool Stuff Around the Web

Posted July 14, 2013 12:00 AM by Chelsey H

Need a quick break? Want to check out a new product or story? I've gathered some cool features from around the web for your viewing pleasure!

The Earthquake-proof table could help save lives in earthquake-prone areas. It's light, inexpensive, functional, and provides protection from falling debris.

A skateboard for stairs, called the Stair Rover, has an eight-wheel mechanism that allows the skateboard to descend flights of steps.

Creative ideas to get rid of fruit flies, which includes the standard funnel fruit fly trap and an idea that includes wasting wine (not going to happen!)

Great article on how twitter helps in emergencies and disasters (and I'm not just saying it's great because it's written by my sister!)

Health mistake - yes or no?

Just for fun (and because I love POPSCI) - How strong can someone be? The science behind these summer blockbusters?

Lots of breakthroughs in cancer research in the past few weeks! Including smart bombs, insights on how cancer cells communicate, identifying new triggers, and a new way of 'starving' the cells. It's exciting to see we're getting closer and closer to a cure!

Just thought this was pretty funny:

Some tools I find super helpful while I'm at work include: Trello, Wunderlist (addicted!), Songza (better than Pandora!), and Workflowy. You can read more about these tools here.

And in case you get bored, test your typing skills here.

The article on twitter use in emergencies was good, but the fifth paragraph should have been the lead paragraph. Consider how this:

"Social media have drastically changed the way people respond to emergency situations..."

is much more of an attention-grabber than the opening line:

"A little more than a month ago, the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness..."

which will put some people to sleep. (Yawn...)

Just sayin'.

Health mistake. Kind of wish they all go play in traffic a foot with their cell phones. That way their not about to get behind the wheel with them. That way the health mistake isn't mine. Almost had a run in with one today at lunch. Head buried in his phone driving thru the parking lot.
