There
has been an increased movement towards renewable fuels such as solar
power in recent years as opposed to the burning of fossil fuels due to
environmental concerns as well as due to the finite amounts of fossil
fuel available. Which fuel is the fuel of the future; fossil fuels or
solar power? This article will attempt to discuss the likelihood of each
fuel source being the fuel of the future.
The Argument for Fossil Fuel
The
burning of fossil fuels has remained the cheapest way to produce energy
during the past century and is likely to remain so for much of the
immediate future. While many have cited the damage to the environment
resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, there has yet to be an
effective replacement for fossil fuels. While solar power and other
renewable energy sources produce energy that can be used locally,
transmission of the power generated by solar power has proven to be
difficult with significant amounts lost in the process of transporting
solar power.
As
such, while some areas are likely to become increasingly reliant on
solar power other areas are unlikely to be able to utilize solar power
until these transmission problems are solved. Further while many people
have discussed the finite levels of oil and other fossil fuels
available, peak oil (which was first mentioned in the 1960's) has proven
to be an elusive idea with new methods for extracting oil and new
efficiencies in engines reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and
increasing the yields generated. Fossil fuels have therefore remained a
major component in the energy infrastructure and will remain one for
years to come.
The Argument for Solar Power
Solar
power is theoretically an infinite resource that man can harness to
fuel a significant portion of their energy needs and does not produce
the harmful environmental effects that the burning of fossil fuels does.
While transmission of solar power remains a technical challenge,
particularly for longer distance transmission, the challenges associated
with solar power are slowly being solved and solar power is becoming
more efficient. Further solar cells are increasingly producing more
power and are also lasting for significantly longer periods of time
which promotes solar power as the energy of the future.
Finally,
governments are receiving pressure by environmentalists and by citizens
concerned about the harmful impact of fossil fuels and are increasing
their investment into solar and other alternative energy sources. Solar
power is likely to remain a viable energy alternative and, if new
efficiencies are developed in the underlying technology, may replace
fossil fuels as the primary source of power.
Conclusion
While
it is difficult to predict the future energy solutions that will be
available due to the changing technologies associated with both the
extraction and burning of fossil fuels as well as the generation,
storage, and transmission of solar power, both solar power and the
burning of fossil fuels are likely to both be major components of the
energy solution of the future. Expectations are that fossil fuels will
remain the primary energy solution in coming years being replaced by
solar power slowly as technologies improve further.
