And, just like the Osprey, it will likely get its butt kicked on an unsuspected heavily defended hot insertion.

Couple of manpads, or even low tech rpg's, where they can't be seen, and ...

Did the Army ask for a replacement? Seems like the ol' 60's do a fine job. I rode them in '84 during training at Ft. Bragg and then several times in and around Kandahar in 2003. Nice bird, flies well, lots of power, maneuvers well, seems to be easy enough to maintain, well understood by the force, and so on.

I admire the technology of the Osprey. I understand the desire for the added range a tilt rotor provides. I dislike seeing a couple of kids playing a video game as a reason to develop this craft.

The immediate drawback I see of this craft over the Blackhawk is the much larger clearing needed for a landing.

These tilt rotors cannot handle, to the extent of a UH-60 or even a UH-1, a fast insertion into an actively hostile landing zone. In that video the troop drop that was depicted took what I would estimate to be in excess of a minute from close final to clearing the lz.

A Huey insertion in Vietnam, under same parameters, would have taken less than 10 seconds. In fact, a UH-1 would not even touch down. The pilot would just rotate from his approach flare to departure attitude a foot or two off the ground which gives the grunts several seconds to un-ass in the process.

The UH-60 is nearly as fast but will bounce off the tail wheel and, I believe, has to put the forward gear on the ground. It is inherently more time consuming than the UH-1.

Of the two times they used an Osprey to emulate these approaches they bent one severely and destroyed another along with several deaths. The pilots, in their zeal, just flew them through the power curve, after being assured that there wouldn't be any problems.

Added range and speed is awesome but the real bread and butter of an assault helicopter is in the lz.

Sorry for my raving but combat helicopter doctrine was forged in Vietnam, the hard way, ie; learn by doing. 40+ years later the powers that be have forgotten all the lessons learned in their apparent trust in technology. Makes me ill.
