Microbial version of this:

A bunker "must have".

Wouldn't cleaning the surface dull the effect?

What you mean? Cleaning?

A thin coating of silver has the same effect. A lot of fridges are made to kill bacteria in this way. My fridge for example has it and it is not particularly new either.

There are Bandaids with silver content around too for the same reasons....

So whatever happened to having a properly functioning immune system so that you don't have to worry about all the little things you can't see hurting you?

Well, thanks to the widespread use of antibiotics we just spent the last 80 years breeding new superbugs and our immune systems have not been able to keep up.

Natural maple cutting boards have a natural anti-bacteria in them...... But hey, you still have to wash them.
