NASA's 6-Foot-Tall Valkyrie 1 Robot: Not Quite Human

Posted December 14, 2013 3:37 PM

From Technabob:

The DARPA Robotics Challenge is all about encouraging the development of humanoid robots that can complete the same tasks we humans do, but in more dangerous conditions - a robot that can get the job done when we don't want to. When those participating in the challenge were announced last year, one entry really stood out. And today, NASA's DRC robot actually exists. It's called Valkyrie 1.

Far too much creative energy being misdirected at making robots that have a "human" form factor.

Form should follow function. Limiting the form limits the function.

Specific function should have an optimised form.

Now, robotic augmentation is another thing...

I like these exoskeletons and their variants.

"Valkyrie 1 and the other entrants will have to perform tasks like climbing a ladder, driving a utility vehicle, and using tools. Therefore the design must be up to par." - tricky to come up with a form which will perform human-oriented functions without at least to some extent replicating the human form.
