I just heard on the radio on my way into work today that this past year was the coldest on record???????/ , but did not catch if it was the coldest period, or in the last 20 or 100 years.

I got rid of DirecTV. I watch whatever movies or TV shows are available on Amazon Prime or Netflix. I seldom watch any live TV anymore, aside from an occasional football game or the local 10 o'clock news and weather (via rabbit ears). I don't watch Fox. I get my news from Drudge and HuffPo and Reason.com.

About 20,000 years ago (a mere tick if the earths clock) Wisconsin was still covered in glacial ice. Since that point is what I consider to be a global warming trend. There wasn't anything man did to create it, nor will there be anything man can do to stop it. Get over it.

There is something we COULD do about air pollution and the health hazards it produces.

Houston chemical plants aren't the problem causing global air pollution.

Denial isn't a river in Egypt.

It is an excuse for not doing anything to curb rampant pollution in the name of making money today, and stonewalling any meaningful attempt to curb the millions of tons of pollution pumped into the atmosphere by polluters who are not worried about their grand children's health.

The problem is well defined. It is just denied by anyone who makes money doing it.

You seem to have a comprehension problem.

Rather than preaching to citizens of the Country that use energy in a most efficient way (can't say improvement is not possible) , I would suggest you direct your comments to the Chinese, SouthEast Asians, Africans, and other heavy polluters and come up with some solutions they can agree on and use, rather than to berate those who are probably very Environmentally aware.

The Chinese pollution issue alone will trump any savings we have on curbing our pollution. Doesn't make it right, but this has to work together

Humans are not going to stop emitting CO2 anytime soon, and anybody that thinks that the global warming agenda, is anything but an agenda, is fooling themselves. It's always been a political agenda that is focused on total global control.

I think you're catching a poor choice of words. I'd bet money that if you looked at what else that researcher has written or said, it doesn't indicate that his/her position equates to, "Because enough people aren't persuaded, 'we' may have to induce one or more deep global recessions."

Rather, I think they're saying that without a sea change in attitude, we're screwed, unless we happen to experience some huge economic contractions from whatever cause.

But keep imagining "these people" if it makes the world simpler for you.

Um, when the scientist refers to "business as usual", he's talking about human CO2 output.

Since we currently are awash in oil, coal, and natural gas, and no viable alternatives yet exist, I can only assume that he is suggesting major, (global), economic downturns as a fix.

Let's not forget; Obama said the same to the entire continent of Africa...don't expect cars or air conditioning, if you plan on using fossil fuels. It must not be allowed.

I would call this an example of American arrogance and imperialism, the likes of which the world has never seen. We can't forbid people from seeking a better life for themselves, unless it is done with solar and windmills. This is the kind of crap that breeds terrorists.

Combine this with the IPCC gal saying that communism is the best answer to global warming, and I'm imagining a planet full of people that are living hand to mouth....just like the former Soviet Union or Cuba, with a self appointed "ruling class" protecting the planet, and controlling all wealth distribution.

America can't prevent Africa from putting in AC or driving fossil-fueled cars, unless we try a lot harder than we're willing to. So I suggest an alternate interpretation of Obama's words is due. Something along the lines of, help us find another way of getting you civilization, and give us a little patience - we're working hard on it.

Likewise with the IPCC communism quote. She's actually quite wrong. The ultimate solution to global warming is the quick extermination of all humanity. The only sure way to prevent Anthropogenic Climate Change is to take the "Anthro" out of it, no?

There is no solution to global warming. It's been cycling hot and cold for hundreds of thousands of years, along with CO2 concentrations...long before the industrial revolution. We can't stop the warming now, and we won't be able to stop the next cooling cycle by burning more stuff. The planet has it's own agenda, and it doesn't include us.

There's a reason that Obama is only willing to speak to college kids...there are too many of the rest of us, that understand what his words really mean.

Unfortunately, they are televised around the world, and they fuel anger and resentment towards the US. We are closing our coal plants, and exporting our coal to those that can afford to buy it...I call that raging hypocrisy, and we have no business wagging our finger in the face of Africa, telling them what they can't have.

Part of the problem with the IPCC science on global warming is to actually select a base line for global temperatures. It would seem that, depending on the period established as a base line, you can have a moving target. If the past 17 years have been cooling, heck, just select or create a lower base line. This from the IPCC:

"The choice of baseline period has often been governed by availability of the required climate data. Examples of adopted baseline periods include 1931 to 1960 (Leemans and Solomon, 1993), 1951 to 1980 (Smith and Pitts, 1997), or 1961 to 1990 (Kittel et al., 1995; Hulme et al., 1999b)."

All of the above periods can arguably be accepted or rejected depending on what is your goal. All of these periods are but a small minute of time in geological standards. What we do know is that humans can thrive in temperatures of say 5-40 degrees C. Further, we can survive much colder temperatures for extended periods as long as we get a small window of the 5-40 C temperatures each year for 2 or 3 months. Perhaps the reason we do not want to respond too quickly with abating global warming, is simply because we do not have a sense of danger. How does anyone get to feel an impact of global warming when these short briefs of data are used to support drastic measurements and speculation.

All this speculation based on such short periods of data are no different than me saying it is getting colder based on the past winter. Hell, it was minus 29 C at night this week. Not as cold as northern Ontario but a record for where I live. What can I say in general other than it is a cold winter. If I compare "normal" temperatures; what time frame do I use? The past 300 years, the past 100,000 years, the past 1,000,000 years, etc. A base line for our current situation may be different than what IPCC established to underscore their agenda. IMO.

Climate scientists have consistently noted that more extreme weather is more likely to occur as a result of ongoing or increasing pollution. That's why they applied what influence they had to change the common vernacular from "global warming" to "climate change."

This more extreme weather includes colder events as well as warmer. Overall, they expect the heat content of the planet to increase.

Sure it gets colder and it gets warmer. Now its extreme weather. Haha ice spells being promised as well with the increased heat content? Its extreme in both directions. Must be a heat pumping process!

Cold and hot at the same time and the main question is still not answered whether or not this is human made or tremendously related to CO2!

When I read your comment about the vernacular I interpret that the climate scientist have been floating with the tide. So much for the ability of prediction.

I can tell you without being a scientist that there will be another big hurricane over Florida. It will be an extreme one after all those fluffy ones in the last years. Beware its Climate Change or is it not?

Did you notice that we have been reporting extreme local wheather events as global happenings? Where does global start and where does it end?

Just to be on the knowing side: when they quote hottest year here and hottest year there, and it is hot on one side of the planet and unprecedented cold on the other side of the planet the hot side will win this game? Looks like we are taking the highs and totally forget the lows on the way. This is this type of statistic that gets me every time (out of four) when I see this!

Perhaps the guy (Steven Goddard, BSEE) got distracted and forgot to document part of his research. There's no description of him contacting anyone at NOAA to explain the discrepancy.

Also, there's also too much sensationalism in this reporting that strains its credibility.
