The Air Force Prototype Fighter That Was Just Never Quite Good Enough

Posted February 01, 2014 3:39 PM

From Gizmodo:

Despite the US military's robust budget, not every design makes it onto the battlefield. In fact, only a select number of the very best designs ever actually fly. So what the hell was the USAF thinking choosing the defect-ridden F-22 Raptor over this gorgeous jet?

Lookup the 'forgotten' Lockheed F107 and the Northrup F-17, which went on to be resurrected as the Navy/USMC F-18 Hornet.

So, what was the purpose of this article? All the way through, I kept reading/hearing "Wahhhh, Mommy, they didn't LIKE my airplane! Mommy, make them LIKE IT!"

I didn't see the 23 doing anything the 22 won't do, it doesn't carry any more nor better weapons, it isn't (by the test pilot's, and apparently the flight test report's own words) as maneuverable as the 22, so what in the world am I missing?

It lost a straight up, fair and square competition. Get over it. And I have no axe with either plane, nor do I love one more than the other. I just can't see why Gizmodo wasted the space on this issue, slanted in the direction it was.

It's Gizmodo. Those people are idiots. It's a tech mag for people with no understanding of tech, written by people with no understanding of tech.

I can only scratch my head and wonder why CR4 keeps linking to that waste of electrons.

I agree, it's a pointless article. Who knows what problems the F-23 might have run into? They could have been far worse. We will never know and why should we waste time thinking about it?

Right. And every time there was a development glitch or budget cutback, the amortized per-plane cost of the F-23 would have risen, just as it did for the F-22.
