From the article:

"The longevity (of XP) is not because of anything special that has to do with XP," said Mr Silver, "it's actually as outlined in the support life cycle Microsoft laid out in 2004."

BULL. The longevity of XP is due to the piss-poor operating systems that came after it. Anyone (especially at Microshaft) remember when all the PC manufacturers had to start offering 'downgrades' from Vista to XP? Vista was a memory hog that tried it's best to lockout the owner/user of the PC. Windows 7 was better with memory usage, but still had everything rearanged - unnecesarily. And Windows 8? Give me a break! They have already had to give W8 users W8.1 for free, and started a cottage industry of third party software to bring back the "Start bar".

well they said it in not so many words........

What's interesting is that it said it right here,………..

On 8 April Microsoft will end support for the venerable Windows XP operating system.

Venerable, it means XP kept their butts out of the fire from getting too burned from the release of the Vista abortion… with people referring back to XP……. And the only way MS can carry on is to take it off life support…… i.e. no more upgrades, security patches etc…

ven·er·a·ble

adjective \ˈve-nər(-ə)-bəl, ˈven-rə-bəl\

: old and respected : valued and respected because of old age, long use, etc.

\Bottom of Form

1: deserving to be venerated -used as a title for an Anglican archdeacon or for a Roman Catholic who has been accorded the lowest of three degrees of recognition for sanctity

2: made sacred especially by religious or historical association

3 a : calling forth respect through age, character, and attainments <a venerable jazz musician>; broadly : conveying an impression of aged goodness and benevolence <encouraged by the venerable doctor's head-nodding>

b : impressive by reason of age <under venerable pines>

Actually, not to be a shit or anything...but it's not far from the truth.

The federal government has had a keen eye on this date for a while. We're still the biggest "single" entity using XP on the globe. I have notifications from Microsoft dated 2005 which stated that end-of-life support for XP would be August 2013. We had been hemming and hawing around and grousing about the date so it was extended. What took us so long is that every stitch and knot had to be inspected to ensure that the "new OS" would meet security and reliability standards.

My workstation at work is getting pushed to Windows 7 on Friday. That's a timely upgrade, eh?

It's far too late. You have proven over and over that you are. And arrogant to boot.

People like who are the reason most people distrust and hate government!

I don't think people 'hate' the government.

As far as blaming individuals for the distrust of the government is ridicules...... unless you mean when its the people that voted in the politicians in the first place.

We are talking about Windows XP here, action-jackson. Take some Gingko, put on a helmet, and get your head in the game.

OT:

It's never too late! Where is your courage, lion?

Arrogant is too modest a word for me.

You don't know who I really work for.

You don't know what my government function actually entails.

Most people don't hate the government. Maybe most people like you...but certainly not most people.

You obviously have a weak grasp on reality and very little understanding of how the government actually works...

I am not talking about elected officials here (you need some help with that, I am sure). I am talking about people who work 24x7 making sure that utilities, services, defense, and everything else the average citizen takes for granted are working. That's the government I am referring to).

OOT:

I will probably get my comment deleted by the moderator, but yours will stay because old-farts are endearing to them.

Your snide/snarky/mean-spirited posts speak volumes for your character as well. You really seem to have a problem with government employees in general...and you do love to generalize and bunch them all together.

You nitpick stupid little bits of information from posts and respond with topically challenged remarks almost every single time. You act the part of the troll then blast others for doing what you do time and time again.

How does that make sense?

</satire>

Cheers!

There has been so much software written for the XP OS (that doesn't run well on Win7 or Win8) that I would not be surprised if some MS engineers leave and start their own business to offer continued support for a nominal fee, much like the various anti-virus companies.

Maybe while there at it, they can fix the problems with Win7 that require I re-install all the drivers for the special cameras I use on my laptop, ever time Win7 does an upgrade.

Yes, you've got to be careful about that. I've got a son who is a internet security guru and I take his advice when it comes to anti-virus software. There are some real b*st*rd companies out there.

What a crock of crap.

"One of the reasons that Microsoft is keen to stop people using XP is because it is feared that once the security updates stop, anyone still using XP will be a tempting target for hi-tech thieves."

No, the reason Microsoft is keen to stop people using XP is that it is a typical greedy POS company that wants to sell newer versions of POS software at inflated prices that will be obsolete sooner and don't work as well.

Microsoft (B Gates) despises consumers and covets money.

My Model A still gets 800 leagues to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it!

The IT (Interruption Technology) Department here where I work has issued an ultimatium that we migrate all test and calibration equipment to Win 7. Systems that have been reliable money makers for years, now are exhibiting issues with admin rights and loss of network connectivity. I've lost 52 hours firefighting the renumerated COM ports, "run in XP mode", and "Run as Administrator" teething problems. I agree that VISTA is a waste of time and money, but Win 7 allows for a huge hard drive.

Resistance is futile

MS should be held accountable for their products because they SELL you the right to use it, but assume no obligation that it ACTUALLY functions as advertised (ie: unintended quirks, bugs, and blue screens, etc.). Hence, they've sold YOU a defective product and are now washing their hands of their (your?) problems.

...they've sold YOU a defective product...

It's been around since 2001 and for prices ranging from $99 to $300 (depending on standard or professional version and whether or not you were upgrading or starting new). Not a bad showing for a defective product.

Re: End Of The Road For Windows XP?

I have XP pro sp 2 on 2 computers that run fine except when MS decides to send a repair, which means another repair to repair the repair, and then another repair to repair the repair to the repair, etc. Right now it is running pretty good, although I had to repair their last repair myself (the internet is wonderful). I intend to turn off all revisions now so that MS doesn't do anything stupid right before the end and then not repair that. I was at a house that still had windows 3.11 running and they could do all they wanted to. (Not what I would have wanted to do) It ran fine for them and their needs. I am going to stay with XP for now and run it until it no longer meets my needs. Then I will switch to something, it depends on what the state of the art is then, and what company has done the best job of meeting my needs. I have no loyalty to MS but overall like XP better Apple system offerings and Linux is "almost" there, but has been for a long time, hasn't it? Maybe someday it will actually get there. The one thing I can say is that Crome is WAY behind everything else. Even 7 and 8 are better.

Today is the day! My OS push to Windows 7 starts at 2:00 PM. These little nag screens will soon be a thing of the past:

Eradication...sounds a little dramatic!

Yeah-Yuh! Welcome to 2009!
