Wave Energy Scheme Breaks New Ground

Posted April 01, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

University of California (Berkeley) researchers are inspired to look below the surface to harness the power of ocean waves. Muddy seabeds, known to buffer and dampen the impacts of waves, can also be used to absorb their energy. A prototype seabed "carpet" is designed to exploit the movement of incoming waves: a rubber mat transfers kinetic energy to underlying hydraulic actuators, generating hydraulic pressure that is piped onshore to be converted into power. The developers contend that just 100 sq m of carpet off the California coast could produce power equivalent to that from a soccer field-sized solar panel array.

Sound like some fundamental mistakes in there to me. Deeper you go the less wave energy... but then it's a University so what would you expect.
And no I couldn't be bothered to read the full article.

Wave power is not new. A swimmer actuator seems better suited to harness the energy from waves.

"Breaks New Ground"? "Makes a splash", surely?

Do they break wind when they start a new wind turbine installation?

See, it's breaking 'ground' because of the use of the seabed.

If they break the ground, where do they attach the wavies to?

I remember my scuba courses and how the pressure fluctuated dramatically as the waves went over thirty feet overhead. I think that there might be something to this scheme.

waves keep on pounding tapered shore. so the earth gets a massive push. Is that greater than the waves? May be.
