An Ingenious Portable Sawmill Lets One Person Turn Trees Into Lumber

Posted April 07, 2014 8:47 AM

From Gizmodo:

Not knowing how to turn a tree into shelter is one of those life skills that I'm ashamed not to have-despite the fact that I'll probably never need to know. To my delight, a Swedish company has invented a sawmill that makes the process almost foolproof.

I cant see the video at this time.

I was convince of these One Man Sawmill, with the exception of:

  • your time is very cheap.
  • You want to keep full control of your business and not hire help.
  • You enjoy this as a hobby
  • You need to fill in some time since you retired. (Logging is for the fit)

I have talked to people that owned one man sawmills, they didn't quite convince me of its use. They do have virtues,....... less waste cutting lumber with a band saw, than a circular saw. Kerf on a circular saw is about 1/4-5/5/16" as compared to the band saw of about 1/16"???? And the mill is more simple.

Unless you want to struggle you keep the size of your logs to a reasonable size. But that can be with any mill, depending on your set-up.

Otherwise then you're limited to length and Diameter length and diameter, but hey, it's under $3,000.00 for a mill.

That is the other thing, they are only using Prime and Select Logs.......Log Grades and this one is easier to read.

On log grades, especially hardwoods, the prime and select would usually go for veneer

Throw some knots in there.........

Not buy a long shot.

Having experience with chain saws, not milling just felling and bucking, I can tell you that to saw a 16 foot, 12 inch diameter log into rough cut lumber, with this setup, will take about an hour start to finish. That will yield about 90 board feet of lumber. The hour gets progressively longer if you have so skid the wood very far.

Sawmillengineer will elaborate, if he chooses.

Yes, one can do it with time, timber, 3 chain saws gas/oil/extra chains, and ideal timber within 100 feet of the "sawmill". Dirt/rocks eat chains, trust me.

We have not even considered construction of the house, which I have done.

Gizmodo....groan.

Hardly a new invention. Just a saw jig with some design features that I can't spot as being particularly novel or fantastic. I can see where it may appeal to some where affordable purpose built machinery is not readily obtainable.

Bandsaw mills of diverse design have been around for a long time.

Nothing beats a saw pit ....

Re: An Ingenious Portable Sawmill Lets One Person Turn Trees Into Lumber

here's nothing wrong with people like this, it adds to the economy..........

We've bought a number of used, but like new chain saws from people like this.

(2) Stihl 041

(1) Stihl 035

(1) Huscavana Can recall the size, it was one of the larger ones.

(1) And a smaller Sachs Dolmar, we use for limbing.

Most the owners that amounted to nothing more than Weekend Warriors, just didn't know how to maintain them.

The Huscavana the owner said when it was new, it cut like a charm, but then it didn't cut $Hi#. When was the matter with it? He ran the chain into the ground. It was $600.00-700.00 chainsaw...... and was selling it for $200.00. It was still on its first mix of gas.

It was so depressing we told him and showed him what was the matter, all he had to do was sharpen the chain "Correctly", but he was so disgusted, he just wanted to sell it and buy the fire wood.

In the last 35 years, we only needed to purchased 4 new chainsaws....... the rest was from the weekend warriors with high ideals........

IMO, As far as these one man Bandsaw mills, I know of some owners,...... and even though they are happy about them,........ I think that is nothing more than their pride talking, not willing to admit their mistake.

We felt guilty, at first............. preying on the ill informed...... but, they did have disposable income..........

I grew up with burning wood as heat. but always felt, if I couldn't make my wood and had to buy firewood, I have some other alternative for heat.......

(plus growing up the farm there was no such thing as child labor laws )

Too much faffing around to be practical Del.

Best way is to have a chain saw chain for the bike chain and get rid of the chain guard.

Just watch that your socks don't snag in it.....
