What do Machinists Dream Of?

"We are not given a dream unless we also have the power to make it happen." -PMPA President Darlene Miller.

I was in the audience when she made that comment at a meeting of students considering their future careers.

That quote resurfaced over the weekend when my son, a CNC operator, sent me the following video "What Do Machinists Dream of?"

It made me smile, because our machinists can in fact make the high precision, high reliability components shown in the video needed for the sponsor's "Dream Mission."

What you dream is important, because it determines what you have the power to achieve. What do you dream of ?

If you dream of an interesting and well paying career, you might want to investigate precision machining.

And yes, we can make the stuff that you see in the video in our shops.

"Moon Mission, anyone?"

I dream of flying like a bird through the dimensions of space time in a mechanical body impervious to aging and environmental conditions....Look for my funding appeal on Kickstarter....

I usually dream up solutions to engineering problems I'm working on. The latest solution I dreamed, was the use of a dowel with a hole drilled in the center to use as a bearing race in a project I making. (If it all works out I'll post the project soon!)

My wife used to get upset when I was doing heavy SW programming because I'd wake in the middle of the night make some notes and leave for work! (This was before internet and work at home options )

Outgassing/thermal/structural analysis, slide rules, T squares and drafting boards got us to the Moon in 1969. We dreamed back then.

Then computers, Catia and solid modeling came along. We still dreamed the same way.

The tools change, the dreams stay the same.

The theme song from "Les Miserables" comes to mind somehow.

I had a dream that someone used my Mitutoyo vernier caliper as an open end wrench. Whew! what a nightmare.

I dream of worlds without hate, without prejudice, without envy or jealously.

There are a few other things these worlds are without, but I'm not comfortable mentioning them in a public forum.
