Wireless Broadband Can Reach the Moon, and Maybe Mars

Posted May 24, 2014 5:13 PM

From Ars Technica:

Aside from air, water and fresh vegetables, what would need to survive on the moon? One thing that would likely of feature high on the list is a decent, reliable wireless internet. And thanks to a group of researches from MIT and Nasa this kind of connectivity could be within the realms of possibility. Between them, the two organizations have demonstrated for the first time that data communication technology is capable of providing those in space with the same kind of connectivity we enjoy on Earth, and can even facilitate large data transfers and high-definition video streaming. To do this it uses four separate telescopes based at a ground terminal in New Mexico to send the uplink signal to the moon. A laser transmitter that can send information as coded pulses of invisible infrared light feeds into each of the telescopes, which results in 40 watts of transmitter power.

Well, that is not going to work so well on Mars, particularly when Earth and Mars are in opposition to each other with the Sun in between.

The time between Earth/Mars via light varies from as little as 4.3 minutes to 21 minutes depending on their orbits.

So, if you think your browser is slow to respond here on Earth, you have no idea what it will be like with an Earth/Mars link.

Not unless you're a Sprint customer.

Ah, yes, they use sub-space.

Not work between Earth and Mars? As described in the article, it's not even going to work between the Earth and the Moon...

To do this it uses four separate telescopes based at a ground terminal in New Mexico to send the uplink signal to the moon.

... unless somehow the Moon/New Mexico orbital relationship is unique, so that the Moon is always visible from New Mexico.

No problem. Just go over the it.

OH wise guru's, where can we find water on Mars?

OK here we go....

Reply.....First you need to learn how to search the Internet....how did you morons ever get to Mars?

Is there no effort whatsoever to proofread prior to publishing or copy/pasting a blog such as this?

.

I understand occasional typographical errors. In fact, I am a regular contributor, albeit not intentionally, to that genre. So the following criticism is not from an outsider with no first hand experience:

.

You have to leave some space between the notes! Including a significant error in each of the first three sentences creates a significant weight opposing the suspension of disbelief....and losing buoyancy there is rarely without repercussions.

.

What is my point? It is probably a good idea to offer readers a sentence free of errors that affect readability well before the fourth sentence.

I think that they are implying that lightbeam based communications would work well to which effect using simple low powered satellites as transmitters repeaters and receivers would be a practical method of implementation.

They wont cure the time lag problem but it would allow for practical communication and data transfer over vast interplanetary distances.

It won't cure the problem of cloud cover, either.

Standard RF tech gets it from the surface to the orbiting satellites and back. Light does the rest in between.
