Self-Assembling Moon House Could be the First Structure on the Moon's surface

Posted May 31, 2014 2:19 PM

From Technabob:

If Humans are ever to spend more than a few days on the surface of the moon or other planet, they will need some sort of shelter. An entrepreneur from Sweden has created a crowdfunding initiative to build what he says could be the first structure on the moon's surface. The house is 75% engineered to spec right now and is made from a thin specially developed space cloth.

Wonderful place to be during a solar storm. Polyethylene will stop most of the protons, but then we still have the problem of X-rays and the usual high-energy, galactic cosmic-ray background which even thick lead plate won't stop. These can penetrate kilometers or more through solid rock. Our atmosphere and magnetosphere shield us from many of the lower-energy CRs, but the Moon has neither.

And they're crowdfunding this? I'll send 'em a penny.

Blah blah blah and woof woof. The difficulty of people living on the moon is not the long term or even the short term effects of radiation. The problem is the short term effects of no ecosystem already existing on the moon.

IMHO There is far too much hubris today that underestimates how much humanity needs the other parts of Earth's biomass that simultaneously supports us and tries to kill us. Too many people today don't understand that tomorrows bread, beer, and burger depends on last month's or year's crop harvest.

Well said. And some people are convinced 'we' ought to send a manned mission to Mars.

I happen to be one of those people that agrees with the idea that we should send people to Mars, but not soon. Before going to Mars we should try to send colonists to the moon.

Most of the artist displayed future moon bases as you see in your picture with vast expanses of clear plastic.

The reality is that such structures would be deep underground, much like the moon base Clavius on 2001

The key word there is 'soon'. Someday, yes. Soon, no - unless 'soon' implies by the year 2200. (What's the rush?; Mars isn't going anywhere.)

Agreed; 'we' need to learn how to live on the Moon long-term, before we seriously think about a trip to Mars.

Well, nothing like sitting with our thumbs up our butt.

If memory serves, the rush to the Moon in 1969 pushed technology forward by leaps and bounds. That technology has made untold benefits in saving lives and improving the human condition.

Sure, we could just sit around and wait for someone else to do it or not do it at all. However, the glory and more importantly, the spoils go to those that push the hardest for the finish line.

I guess the lesson of the 1960s is totally lost to those that grew up then (which is our current leadership) because that old saying that, "If you remember the 1960s you weren't there." is proven only too true.

Instead, we are taught that being exceptional is bad because it's not fair.
