Solar Trade Decision Represents Threat To Industry

Posted June 04, 2014 10:16 AM

From Renewable Energy News - RenewableEnergyWorld.com:

The news could not have been any worse. In a deeply troubling decision, the U.S. Department of Commerce today imposed new tariffs on solar modules from China that threaten to derail the rapid growth of the U.S. solar industry. Commerce will immediately impose countervailing duty tariffs ranging from 18.56 to 35.21 percent.

I wonder if this was the administration's last ditch effort to try and save Solyndra from bankruptcy.

Of course they are a few years too late.

Oh, well. I guess I will be scrapping my solar panel project.

What next, US Government coal powered emergency generators?

So the Department of Commerce is damping commerce.

I'm no environmentalist, but who can't get behind solar.

This decision doesn't pass the stink test.

Who can't get behind solar?

Anyone who has to account for the amount of red ink in their balance sheet.

As someone from Ontariowe who has to live with skyrocketing hydro rates, largely due to the wonderful mis-FIT program of green energy instituted by our wonderful provincial government, I wish I could give you 2 GA's!!!

The Ontario Energy Board has clearly reported (http://www.ontarioenergyboard.ca/OEB/_Documents/MSP/MSP_Report_20120427.pdf) that the major driver of increased energy prices in Ontario has little to nothing to do with renewable energy.

The main driver of the "global adjustment" cost (which is the guaranteed price structure paid out to ALL generators) is the high subsidies to nukes operated by Bruce Power and OPG, and owned (and still not paid for 30 + years in) by the people of Ontario.

Renewable energy subsidies seem to get a bad rap because some people seem to forget or neglect the MASSIVE subsidies put into the grid, and all other generating technologies over decades. FIT programs are an effort to level out the subsidy playing field, because we can't just erase the massive debt put into nukes and the grid. (But in Ontario we pay for it monthly as a 'debt retirement charge).

You can believe the OEB all you want- just as some people obviously believed our last premier when he said he would not raise taxes- but when they are offering fixed contracts for green power generation at well above what I actually pay I call them liars if they say it doesn't impact that price.

We may well be paying out subsidies for the nukes, but the government is obligated to purchase power provided (at a MUCH HIGHER guaranteed price structure) by windmills etc. whether or not it is needed, and dumping excess power to neighbouring provinces and states at a loss. Meantime, the nukes have to keep running and we have to install peaking supply as well in the form of gas generation that can respond quickly when solar or wind drops suddenly.

The FIT program is a joke.

FIT programs are a joke. I've had companies offer to install them on my roof

I think this is connected to the recent DOJ announcement of charges against Chinese military hackers. Like, "Since they stole the designs, we're justified in slapping tariffs on their stuff."

So, we can now put tariffs on the imports of Chinese F-35s?

On a slightly different topic......... actually quite a bit different.

I heard on the farm market report this morning that the PEDV virus happening to pigs, are linked to imported feed-stuffs from China. I did a quick look to see if I could find anything to back it up on the internet..... but found nothing.
