New Technology Recycles Copper from Car Cables

Posted June 09, 2014 1:48 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

With only 40 years' worth of mineable copper remaining world-wide, auto makers - especially those that build popular hybrids that consume large amounts of copper in their wiring harnesses - are combating resource depletion with new recycling technologies. Toyota, for example, developed the first mechanical sorting process that can prevent contamination from minute impurities. The system can produce 99.96% pure copper, which Toyota is now feeding back into the wiring harness manufacturing line. Plans are to turn out 1,000 tons of the recycled copper annually by 2016.

Recycling copper is so old that even thieves have figured it out. Where have you been?

"only 40 years worth of mineable copper remaining world-wide". Who plucked that jem of pseudo statistical information out of the air? We want PROOF. If you are hawking a system for recycling copper, there could be an incentive to massage the figures.

True, we ran out of oil over twenty years ago from some historical estimates.

Do some research and invent an alloy(Cu/Al or similar) which will use less copper.
