Gauging Local Illicit Drug Use in Real Time Could Help Police Fight Abuse

Posted June 11, 2014 11:25 AM

From EurekAlert! - Breaking News:

The war on drugs could get a boost with a new method that analyzes sewage to track levels of illicit drug use in local communities in real time. The new study, a first-of-its-kind in the US, was published in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology and could help law enforcement identify new drug hot spots and monitor whether anti-drug measures are working.

Are you implying that they don't need to test the sewage to see if the anti-drug efforts are working???

I would rather they monitor the sewage for drugs in order to understand if the sewage treatment methods are effective in purifying the water.

As your data shows, law enforcement does not reduce drug abuse. Law enforcement can only incarcerate an abuser. Drug abuse happens in people of all backgrounds, creed and work ethics.

So what do they do? Find an increased reading at the sewage plant and swim upstream to find the source?

Which drugs are they looking for?

Sewage treatment plants may contribute to antibiotic ...

Water discharged into lakes and rivers from municipal sewage treatment plants may contain significant concentrations of the genes that make bacteria antibiotic-resistant. That's the conclusion of a new study on a sewage treatment plant on Lake Superior in the Duluth, Minn., harbor.
