World Cup 2014 To Be Most Hi-Tech Ever

Posted June 10, 2014 9:36 AM

From BBC News - Technology:

German company GoalControl has fitted 14 high-speed cameras - seven per goalmouth - to the roof of each of the 12 stadiums. These are connected to an image-processing computer that filters out non-ball-shaped objects and tracks the ball's position to within a few millimetres, the company says.

Yeah, but they still can't avoid giving a penalty to Brazil because a defender touched Fred (yes that is his surname!) on the shoulder.

Imagine the scene... Brazilian soccer star out shopping. Little old lady taps him on the shoulder to ask the way to the cafe.. he falls backwards squashing her, arms outstretched demanding a penalty with a stupid grin on his face.

Oh you just gotta watch the video it's hilarious.

They should have won without recourse to cheating... (shrugs) same old same old. I'm sure they'll find a way to dissallow some England goals despitethe new technology.

You can lump all your savings on a Brazil win right now...

I'm off to mortgage the house!

Opening match, that seemed to go.... the wrong way. Well, on equalizer goal also there was a foul at the beginning, and third goal was easy when Croatia opened-up to equalize, something that they shouldn't be driven to do in the first place. It was too much of a push, and I can understand that Brazilian team is TOO HEAVILY stressed, but since history doesn't play football, you can't win the title just because your fans want it bad. Anyway, I'm sure they'll be much better in next games. My point is that technology to totally eliminate referee mistakes at least only for international games due to cost, is feasible, but for some reason they won't employ it. And I don't buy the "reasoning" that eliminating referee "error" would make football dull, that is rubbish. S.M.

They only finally agreed to goal line technology after the the last world cup England Germany match where the whole world saw Frank Lampard's shot cross the line by a yard ... except any of the match officials. Sepp Blatter was so embarrassed he finally conceded that it was needed.

My twin daughters played briefly in Brazil. Believe it or not diving in Brazil is taught as a game technique. They think it is part of the game. It is a part of the game destroys the game. It is the Ugly in the beautiful game.

Yes, we have got incredibly high-tech, but the outcome of the world cup can still be determined more by poor refereeing than by good football. Brasil's first goal was scored by someone who should have been sent off moments earlier, and the second from a farcical penalty. The whole thing is a farce, and just a show, which is why I lost interest in the world cup many, many years ago.

I've never, ever, ever lost interest in beer, crisps and peanuts. Interesting, that.
