Beer Makers Brewing Up Water Conservation Strategies

Posted July 27, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Big U.S. brewers are trying to cut back their water use in response to drought and wildfires that threaten supplies. Conservation efforts include sensors to prevent overuse of water for irrigation, and native grasses to reduce erosion. Inside the plant, facility managers monitor machinery for leaks, and recycle pressurized water to clean bottles and cans. Yet another water-saving strategy employs a heat exchange system to capture heat energy from the processing line, using it to brew the next batch of beer. Results? MillerCoors, for example, claims it has saved a billion barrels of water since 2012.

...5% beer. (Which I took as a rough average.)

You must be using that Common Core math. Seems to me when the water content goes from roughly 95% to 90%, it hasn't been halved. It has been reduced by about 5.3%.

I'm just using math lubricated by a long day and a pint of Rogue Brewery's Arrogant Bastard ale.

I've had that; it's an excellent ale.

I think the % of water actually in the product is not where the reduction lies.

The water savings to which the article refers is process water, not water in the product.

I like beeeer, it makes me a jolly good fellow.

Beer is proof that God loves us. -- Benjamin Franklin.

My wife not permitting me to have any, well that is an entirely different issue and problem, or rather set of problems. The best way to conserve water is to drink beer? Beverage use of water is only a tiny fraction of water consumption in the U.S.A. Rather than try to find ways to re-use water (after treatment), or locating new sources of water that can be treated to potable standards, local governments simple clamp down on water consumption and supposedly punish the abusers/wasters with penalties, fines, and fees. What we need to for God to bless us all with rain.

I'm sure if they supply the beer we can find enough guys to fill those C 130 for fire fighting. That way they are not wasting good water that can be used for the beer.

I like the idea, but how many guys can stand at the rear hatch at any given time?

You could call these guys "Hot Dogs".
