Does this say more about society or women's mathematical skill?

I am inclined to say it's about this woman's math skills.

This, however, is prolly a naïve posture.

For a hoot I read some of the comments on the CNN site. It generated almost 1,300 comments in less than two days; must have gotten pretty snotty, the thread is already closed to comments. Only read the first page of them... WOW, now those guys know how to derail a thread in a hurry!

With the work being in theoretical geometric shapes, we should be able to get a really sweet cast iron bath design.

Isn't that what is really important here?

It's newsworthy to me because my wife can't even follow the basic mathematical concepts of how transferring money from our joint bank account to our joint checking account (of which I put the money in both to begin with) does not truly count as her having put her money in the checking account.

... because she has somewhat 'broken the mould'.

A few years back I got butchered by Admin folk for taking the pee over them celebrating (as best I recall), an African-American woman awards type thing. Duly apologized to anybody who misunderstood. It would be a better world if we simply applauded people who acheived great things, with no regard to gender/colour/creed.

The person in this case does deserve credit. Not because of gender or anything else. The odds were against her. Religeous zealots would try to inhibit her. She deserves acknowledgement for setting an example.

...but, but, but...what we really want to know is: Does it come with a PINK ribbon for female recipients and a BLUE ribbon for male recipients (wink, wink)?

Personally I could care less. It's theoretical mathematics of which the one crowning achievement of all of it is that largely no one can prove or disprove that it relates to any practical part of reality or not which is why it called theoretical.

In theory it might work but in reality the odds are no one will ever find a practical application that proves it.

"Personally I could care less."

Then why don't you?

For me practicality of application is what's counts.

If they are handing out awards for inventing things that have no real purpose as of yet that might possibly be slightly useful for some other poorly known or understood concept I am way behind on getting proper recognition for my all the years of my work.

Re: Woman wins Math's Highest Honor

This blog is an epic fail. The title describes her as a 'Woman', rather than mentioning her name - Maryam Mirzakhan - then proceeds to flop on detailing what she has done. Had she been a bloke, a quick google would reveal her academic background and a bit more detail of her exactly what she has done. No doubt her work is way over my head, but it's a bit lame of CR$ not to give some link for those of us who would like to bash their brains trying to comprehend. It's not far short of patting her on the head and saying, 'yes, you clever little thing'. Had she been male, the story might have been reported with a bit more respect.

The mathematical question, "Just who do you have to sleep with to win this damn thing?" has finally been answered.

A triumph for mathematicians everywhere.
