CR4 and IHS Engineering360: New Online Destination for Engineers

Posted September 02, 2014 12:00 AM

After 10 years of strategic planning and acquisitions, IHS Engineering360 will be released in September. Upon launch, this will become the largest online destination for the engineering community - reaching half the world's engineers with cutting-edge research, data, and insight not available anywhere else.

CR4 is going to be an important part of IHS Engineering360! I'm excited to make this announcement because IHS Engineering360 will provide you with so much more to explore during your daily CR4 visits.

More Content for You

In addition to the community content you see every day, the new content coming your way includes:

  • Editorial content, features, and news. A team of writers and editors will be bringing you the latest industry news, interviews, perspectives, and critical information.
  • Product research and discovery tools. Searching for parts will be even easier; just click on the tab that will appear at the top of all CR4 pages.
  • Standards, e-books, patents, and journal articles will be available by subscription.

What to Expect

The transition will be simple for CR4 members. The main change that you'll see is a new masthead, including logo and links, across the top of every page.

Most things won't be changing just yet:

  • The link. You can access CR4 by navigating to http://cr4.globalspec.com. You can also visit this site by clicking on the Engineering Community tab at the top of the new IHS Engineering360 site.
  • Forum discussions and blogs. You can still post questions and discussions here on CR4, in addition to commenting on user-generated conversations and your favorite blogs. The site functionality won't be changing at this time.
  • Logging in. Your CR4 user name and password will remain the same. Keep in mind that you'll need a separate login to comment on IHS Engineering360 editorial content.
  • The CR4 Daily Digest. You'll continue to receive the CR4 Daily Digest newsletter (the summary of the day's new posts to CR4) in your inbox each day.

The community will grow as a result of this change. CR4 will have more exposure and it's likely that we'll be welcoming new users later this month. I have some things planned to get them up to speed on how CR4 works, the site rules, and how to be good members. I'm sure everyone will give them a free pass on homework questions and manufacturer phone calls the first time around.

I'm looking forward to this. I wonder why, though, that one log-in is not sufficient. It seems odd, at this point in web and app design, that the same account and a single log-in can't be used for both:

Logging in. Your CR4 user name and password will remain the same. Keep in mind that you'll need a separate login to comment on IHS Engineering360 editorial content.

The content on Engineering360 will be handled through a separate platform, kind of like the articles on Electronics360. It uses a third party app called Livefyre to manage comments.

I imagine at some point there will be a single login for the whole Engineering360 site, which will include CR4, the editorial side, and GlobalSpec search.

Is CR4 going away? Will it become part of IHS Engineering360? If there are two communities, where's the best place for us to continue to blog? Our audience consists of engineers as well as hobbyists, both of whom are represented here on CR4. Thanks in advance for answering.

CR4 will be the community of the new IHS Engineering360. The editorial piece of that site will be separate and will consist of features, news, and analysis. It will be more newspaper/magazine type content rather than blogs. The only similarity is that commenting will be allowed on those articles.

CR4 will still offer the same blog and forum functionality. You will be able to participate in the same ways. The only change you'll see immediately is a new masthead (logo and links) across the top of each page.

There will be opportunities to advertise across the entire IHS Engineering360 platform. If you'd like me to put you in touch with someone to discuss advertising options, please send me a private message with your contact details.

"The site functionality won't be changing at this time" - what does this mean?

Wellllll..let me explain that little catch phrase. Last time I heard that the little company I worked for had just been bought by a giant one and the CEO said "We won't be closing any sites, at this time." That meant 2 years. Get the gist of that phrase? Give it a year or two and everything will change.

And clicking on "Home" - or on the masthead - doesn't go back to CR4; is this not a change of functionality?

The changed Home buttons are because CR4 is now a part of IHS Engineering360. Please see this post for more information about what the buttons/links do: http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/25325/Changes-to-CR4-Navigation

... And the right-click menu (in the edit window) has disappeared (was handy for posting links). Seems like a bit of a change of functionality to me - what do you think, Savvy?

I wasn't aware that it was going away (although a lot of people complained about it in the past). I'll see what I can find out.

In the meantime, you can use the hyperlink button on the toolbar, if you're using a browser that supports the toolbar (IE, Firefox, Chrome).

Congratulations IHS and CR4 forum. Hope it will be global forum. It is not well known here in India. Only few engineers are members. We have quite large population of English speaking professional engineers in various fields here. Their participation will be very much fruitful. You will have to promote CR4 here, you will also generate additional revenue through Indian Industry with their contribution in advertisements in CR4 Digest. For promotion you will have to make announcement through various engineering associations and technical magazines such as CII, IPF, TOI etc. This will be free promotion.

"If you like your user name and password you can keep your user name and password".

Why does that sound familiar?
