Row Over Polish To Detect 'Rape Drug'

Posted August 28, 2014 1:28 PM

From BBC News - Science & Environment:

Four male college students at the North Carolina State University are developing a new kind of nail polish that changes colour in the presence of date-rape drugs, like GHB and Rohypnol.

I object to the inference that Polish people use rape drugs and the fact that they would have to be forced into a body of water to be rowed over by some madman in a boat!

It's more efficient to row over them in columns, not boats.

Re: Row Over Polish To Detect 'Rape Drug'

While this nail-polish, in general, strikes me as an idea with merit, it strikes at my sensibilities that such a thing is a even a remotely necessary idea. Maybe Cyrus the Virus said it best: "I despise rapists. For me, they're somewhere between a cockroach and that white stuff that accumulates at the corners of your mouth when you're really thirsty."

So, a woman joins some guy she recently met for a few cocktails. With this glamorous nail color, the woman has one more arrow in her quiver of defenses against some @$$hol3 that might slip her something. I hope that when such a substance is detected the jackass who did it is revealed somehow to the public (there are still places in America where men look at rapists as the $hit$tains that they really are).

And now, the clamoring from the cheap seats... This nail polish is useless because:

Anti-rape advocate Jessica Valenti says: "We should be trying to stop rape, not just individually avoid it."
Anti-rape advocate Erin Gloria Ryan says [We should] "Teach men that having sex with women too incapacitated to consent is rape."

So sayeth The Mice in Council.

The college students developing this do admit one draw back on this nail polish..... And that is, it makes the wearer of this nail polish very, very amorous.

The Students commented that further field tests are required.

Maybe I could just paint the base of a fancy stir stick, that doubles as a breath alcohol level tester....?

Ya know, it's quite politically incorrect to presume that women alone are slipped a Mickey (that would be 'slipped a roofie' for the younger crowd) in an attempt to gain some advantage.

There are vicious predatory women who haunt bars looking for guys with money....they pick their target, slip them a mickey, take them to nearby motel room where an accomplice is waiting, to rob them of anything and everything they can get...also if you see a friend get too drunk too fast, you can check his/her drink and possibly save him/her from a bad experience.....and possibly get a chance to beat the crap out of some lowlife....and then send them to jail....

There's some important advice you're insinuating but not saying outright. I think it needs to be made more clear and obvious:

NEVER go into a bar alone, wingmen (and BFFs) save lives.

The Designated Driver isn't just 'the poor sucker who isn't drinking,' that person is the watchdog for the group, the chaperone, the one person whose judgement isn't getting clouded by alcohol, who can tell when someone is getting too drunk too fast, or is trying to make moves on a chick who 'just feels evil' (or is clearly a dude to the sober people). The DD isn't just tasked with driving everyone home at the end, but for keeping everyone safe while they're out having fun.

You have to say no...and mean it. People need to be told what's acceptable behavior because, apparently, the young don't know what's rape and what's not. Just because a woman dresses to attract a guy doesn't mean she's dressed to attract aggression. No woman, or man for that matter, deserves to be raped.

I've noticed that my news agencies don't report "rapes" anymore, they report "sexual assaults". "Rape" so sounds so brutal, doesn't it? Ooooh, let's trivialize the act, marginalize the victims and shelter the perpetrators shall we? That's great, because now I have to tell my daughter that 20% of female Canadian university students can expect to get raped, she may have no support and the perpetrator is the victim. WTF??????

what is also a crime (or should be) is when the perpetrator is portrayed as the victim.

As far as the sound of "Rape"... its the context its carried in, some people have a hard time picking up on that. And brutal is a good term.

For me, Rape or Sexual assault. For me it makes no difference no matter how it's painted.

As far as todays college statistics, how are they different from 30-40 years ago. Its just now, more are getting reported.

Very few rapes on Canadian campuses are reported, something like 10%. Not all rapes are brutal and violent, a lack of consent or the mental acuity to decide to consent [drunk, passed out, high] is rape. That's why parents need to educate their kids about alcohol, drugs and people. Thankfully, university administrators recognize that parents and schools have failed in teaching their kids what's right and what's wrong and are stepping in.

Re: Row Over Polish To Detect 'Rape Drug'

And what's most difficult for me is countering what my kids see and hear everyday. Like it or not, they are bombarded by bad messages in music, on tv and in public. People getting drunk at sporting events, song lyrics celebrating gangster life and ill treatment of women, modern "musicians" putting nude photos on the internet, the list goes on.

Despite my best and repeated efforts, my eleven your old son thinks he can do and say what he wants, when he wants and to whomever he wants. I control his technology and punish him [he does lots of pushups because I can't paddle his butt] when he steps out of line, but so far I don't see a change in his behavior; I'm hoping that will change for the better as he grows older.

He knows what unconditional love is and, so far, he hasn't taken advantage of that. He also knows that he WILL get punished for his bad behavior and why, and that it's my responsibility to reward the good behavior [allowance, freedoms] and punish the bad [pushups, dirty jobs]. All that might be a little heavy for an eleven year old, but he needs to hear it before he gets his ass kicked in the schoolyard.

Society seems to be doing nothing to back me up. Sometimes I feel like I'm standing in the face of a tsunami. I have a ton of respect for single parents that really try to be responsible and active in their kids' lives. I can also see why some parents just give up.

There is a new shade called "Coup'e de Adore" It resembles the trauma caused by closing the car door on ones fingers.

There might be colored lights in the bar with poor lighting and flashing lights and ....maybe you're so plastered you're sticking your finger into somebody else's drink who is not happy and thinks you're up to something and calls the bouncer who beats the crap out of you by mistake....Well it's best to travel in a pack, and have everybody look out for everybody else...or just party at home....or just drink responsibly keeping your wits about you at all times.....this is what I do, I never get drunk...I don't leave my drink unattended, and if it happens inadvertently, I order another fresh, usually switching to soft drink or water....
