Motors Matter: Understand the Differences Between Immersible and Submersible

Posted October 02, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Pumps & Systems presents this educational essay explaining the key design characteristics and application criteria pumping system designers and developers must consider when selecting the right motor - submersible or immersible - for the job at hand. Learn not only how totally enclosed non-ventilated (TENV) motors can be designed to run continuously while submerged, but how they also can run in dry-pit applications. Meanwhile, although immersible motors run primarily in dry applications while also employing TENV enclosures, they also can handle periodic flooding. This article details all of the latest design features of these two motor types (including sealing systems) and offers sound motor selection advice.

immersible,

1. to plunge into or place under a liquid; dip; sink.

2. to involve deeply; absorb: She is totally immersed in her law practice.

3. to baptize by immersion.

4. to embed; bury.

submersible (adjective)

1. capable of being submersed.

2. capable of functioning while submersed :a submersible pump. (noun)

3. a ship capable of submerging and operating under water; submarine.

4. a device designed for underwater work or exploration, as a bathyscaphe or diving bell.

It appears to me 'submersible' is the correct term for a pump installed under water or another fluid.
