Engineering News Blog Retired, New Feed to Engineering360 Launched

Posted November 20, 2014 10:00 AM by SavvyExacta

By now you're probably familiar with CR4's new look following the launch of IHS Engineering360 in September. In case you missed it, read my overview here.

Another small change was rolled out today. The Engineering News blog has been retired and replaced with a feed of stories posted on IHS Engineering360. Headlines will still be provided to you, but instead of clicking to read a synopsis and then clicking again to go to the whole story, you'll be directed right to the original article.

(Note: some users may experience a mis-displayed masthead--a simple refresh (Cntrl - F5) should fix that!)

There are no plans to change the user discussion forum threads or blog areas of CR4. Those will continue to live here on CR4 and function as they do today.

Read on if you'd like a clearer explanation of what's changing with Engineering News.

Old Engineering News

In the past, CR4 admin curated stories into the Engineering News blog. Posts from this blog were displayed in the Engineering News box on the homepage and at the bottom of each edition of the Daily Digest.

Here's what it looked like on the homepage:

And here's the process it took to get to the original story if you wanted to read the whole thing:

New Engineering News

You'll still be able to access news from CR4 on most weekdays! News links will still appear in the box on the homepage and at the bottom of the Daily Digest. These links will take you directly to the stories on IHS Engineering360.

Here's what it looks like:

And here's how simple it is to get to an article:

Community Participation

I realize that the old Engineering News feed often had offbeat or unique stories and that IHS Engineering360 usually has a more serious focus. You're encouraged to share interesting (and on-topic) news with the community by creating new discussion threads about topics you'd like to share. (Please remember to respect copyright; always include a link to the source and copy no more than three paragraphs.) Many of you are already doing this, and it's great, so thank you!

Savvy has earned some much-deserved vacation. I've agreed to answer any community questions as best I can in the meantime!

I'm not inclined to register for another site just to be able to comment on items that, before the big change, would have required no more effort than commenting on a "normal" CR4 discussion.

Even though we all know that we are here at the pleasure of IHS, I think that CR4 regulars should be allowed to comment as before, without registering, yet again.

I forget new screen names and passwords as soon as they are entered anyway.

Anyway, to say that you have some large shoes to fill would be in insult to our Savvy, so let's just say thanks for filling in for her.

Eventually we will have a single sign-on (though the date for that is unknown) once the programming infrastructure is in place.

It takes a pretty good friend to volunteer to take her place on the hot seat.

I have noticed, on the new E360 articles I have read, that there are no comments. There may be some recent threads with comments, but I haven't seen any. Not one. Is there any validity to my observation?

I sense a reluctance from the group (as a whole) to sign up. Is there any validity to this observation?

And lastly. why doesn't Tarzan grow a beard?

Not 100% sure what you mean. This recent article on Eng360 has a comment (even if the comment quality is woeful). Are you referring to the comments for the Engineering News feed?

"This recent article on Eng360 has a comment (even if the comment quality is woeful)." Yes, I did see that one... perhaps, if a one word comment that is the commenter's name counts as a comment, then I misspoke when I said I didn't see one thread with a comment.

"Are you referring to the comments for the Engineering News feed?" Yes.

The general gist of my comment is, with the change I am seeing no participation from the CR4 community in the form of a comment, for that matter, I am seeing no participation in the form of comment from any source. I am sure that you will agree we here at CR4 are a chatty bunch, seldom hesitating to toss in a comment of some type about just about anything. It seems quite odd to me that, with the recent change, nobody has anything to say.

It is well known that I have an opinion about just about everything. If you notice, even I haven't commented on any of them because I am resisting signing up on another forum.

I signed up a while back, like a couple months ago, and made one comment. For the longest time mine was the only comment there so eventually I stopped going back.

I decided that if a really good article deserved to be read and commented-on by CR4 members I'd copy the article and start a discussion about it on CR4.

I see no point in having another separate website that duplicates a lot of what CR4 has been doing, especially since it requires another login.

"I see no point in having another separate website that duplicates a lot of what CR4 has been doing..."

Well, I think it's really CR4 that was duplicating what E360 is doing. If this thinking is correct, then the format change is understandable.

"...especially since it requires another login." Ah HA! The point of my resistance.

To perhaps restate my question, are there other CR4 members resisting as well, or are we simply not interested enough in the recent string of articles to comment on any of them?

Shape changing airfoils? That is quite an interesting article and subject.

I only wanted to determine to what exactly you were referring Doorman...

Anyway, comments on engineering news have been eliminated so as to not siphon away comments that should be submitted after the full article on the Insights homepage. And readers should explore the full article before submitting comments or using the star rating system.

We're working toward a single sign-on for all GlobalSpec domains, so at some point to transition between pages and post types will be seamless.

Lastly, Tarzan doesn't grow a beard because Jane is a clean-shaven kind of girl.
