CR4 Bugs - Share Them Here

Posted December 22, 2014 1:42 PM

Here's your chance to vent - what's broken on CR4? For example, I know that a number of users cannot post pictures.

Please share anything that's not working as it should. I'm going to create a list of things I'd like our development group to fix in 2015.

Edited: here's a list of what's been suggested so far, with some of my own added in:

  • Image insertion/editing not working across all browsers (for some users)
  • Some toolbar functionality not working (symbols, emoticons, sub/super) across all browsers (for some users)
  • Some users cannot see images in posts, but know that they are there due to spacing
  • Large images push threads off screen to right (may be resolved - unsure)
  • No text editor toolbar in Safari (there never has been one)
  • Right click functionality is clunky (always has been)
  • Back-end issues related to re-subscribing users to the Daily Digest email newsletter
  • Clicking the "find in discussion" link on a comment that's not on the first page of a thread does not work

Share your ideas for new stuff here.)

To cut and paste something requires too much right and left clicking....but this is probably low priority....

Unfortunately, that clunky left click menu in CR4 is supposed to be that way.

You can always use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+V for paste. It's a little easier.

Can't use CTRL+V on a mobile phone nor iPad nor with any other touch-screen device.

True, these devices don't have right click functionality, either. On my phone and iPad I press and hold to get a menu which gives the paste option. This works in CR4 (I just tried it) to paste text or a link, but not an image.

Two Zen swordmasters had a contest. As a fly passed by, the first took a swing, and the fly fell in two halves on the floor. As another fly went by, the second swung, but the fly kept going. The first swordsman laughed, "You missed." The second replied, "Ah so, but he will never reproduce!"

Just curious as to if this was an actual 'magic light show' somewhere or if just a computer generated blurb, who generated it?

I can't seem to post pictures from chrome correctly. If I'm submitting a blog post or anything where I want the spacing or formatting to be consistent, I have to do it through Firefox. This has been a consistent bug for years as far as I can tell.

I use IE at work. Can't post pictures. Can't directly post emoticons but I can copy and paste them. I think I tried other browsers at work with the same result. No big deal to me.

My Firefox, Opera, most everything works fine at home.

And phoenix 911, anonymous posters bug me. I've learned to grudgingly live with them. You may have to do the same with me.

All in all, a great site!

Using Chrome, the subscript and superscript work in the message box, but not in the preview window or final post. They work OK in Internet Explorer.

I use IE 10 here at work and sometimes images on postings don't show for some reason. I don't even see one of those little broken image icons. Just blank whitespace. If I see a specific example, I will post again with the thread identification.

For a few months the special character and emoticon menus haven't worked. The menu pops up and I can select an item, but it does not insert. Other toolbar items still work. I have IE, but it goes through some Google app that my IP uses for email. I can't tell if the problem is on your end or mine.

Development group?! The whole thing is rediculous. You could buy Xenforo and have it up & running in a week. 10x better for 1/1000 the cost.

But I know you wont do that because you have an emotional attachment to your creation.

So here are a few ideas:

Get rid of the list of posts. Its a worthless dunsel that just makes the page longer.

Get rid of the preview. It just slows us down.

Extend editing to at least a day.

And for heavens sake, put a proper quote thing in it! SHEESH!

Periodically, I have this crazy problem that the width of the displayed post falls off the right of my screen, and I have to scroll far off to the right be able to reply. Is that an evil conspiracy? It seems to happen when others post images a certain way.

Sometimes, even though I have read a blog entry or comment, it continues to show up in the "new comments" list. A check box might help with this?

Generally, readings these posts the last few years has helped me in umiginable ways, because I simply can't imagine them .

"Extend editing to at least a day."

Oh right - so you can change your mind after receiving criticism and inaccuracies in your original post, making fools of those who point out your errors. Sorry - out of the question.

By the way, "rediculous," "dunsel," "put a proper quote thing in it." Sheesh!

I use IE 8 and Windows XP at work (at least until our IT department updates my laptop or gets me a new one).

Occasionally in some post threads the content will be stretched such that I have to scroll to the right to read all of the commenter's text. I have a feeling it has to do with a photo that's been put into someone's comment.

So it may actually be fixed now. I'll let you know the next time I see it (if I do).

I just saw AH post and agree....... Safari support

It's like trying to keep a late 1800's one-off horseless carriage on the road as a daily driver. It can be done, but it's a lot of work and it will never really be able to keep up with even ordinary cheap modern cars.

Don't know if this is broken or not; maybe just the poster's responsibility. When they post "go to website here" that is fine right then. But if you print it and need it considerable time later, you're up the creek . . . . Another site I get (World Start) puts in a footnote with the actual web address.

Someone mentioned above to eliminate the preview. Until you can convince people to use spell check, that is a dumb idea. I've found my own mistakes even on the second reading! Therefore, it's a good idea for accuracy.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or should go in the new idea thread.

It would be nice to be able to move the word correction window that pops up with suggested words during a word search. Sometimes it's covering the word it has identified as being misspelled. I'd like to see the context but haven't been able to without getting out of the spell checker.

I use Chrome and occasionally a page will hang immediately after the topic comes up. I suspect the problem rests in the advertisements. If I stop the download the page completely fills with what I read.

Use Firefox. Once you have it, download IOBIT Advanced system Care 8 (the free version). That has a bolt on (freebee again) that will update your drivers, including add-ons. I can't guarantee this 100 %, but I've used it on 3 computers with no problem. It will do a system restore before making changes, but do your own before embalking upon using it.

It's the only version of stuff I've seen that will do a thourough clean and do a free driver upgrade. Been a while, so watch to uncheck any boxes that invite to install toolbars etc. Most driver upgrade freeware is a croc - from my experience this one works. Be wary of letting it do active protection (you can turn that feature off).

If it's any measure, this is the only bit of freeware I've seen in a long while that I'm considering paying for the full version. I re-iterate, watch to stop it doing active monitoring, that may clog you system.

Get it set up, use it to clean your computer, then get it to check for driver updates. I suggest you run CCleaner afterwards. It found and installed about 20 driver updates on this computer, then wiped about 50 MB that CCleaner had not found.

Usual disclaimers. Either go to their site or go via MajorGeeks.

You are using Chrome. I would suggest swapping to Firefox and setting that as default browser. Just my opinion - best of liuck.

I have a Chromebook also. Used to have Firefox as the browser, but it disappeared and now it wont reinstall. "not supported" I think Google is at war with Firefox.

I haven't had any trouble here, but Chrome does not work properly with Ebay. Thats why I had Firefox.

Chrome does seem to be an oft referred to alternative. I've had various stuff tell me it's 'not supported on Firefox', but for whatever reason it seems to be OK if I ignore the warnings.

Have you tried completely uninstalling Firefox and then upgrading it ? Remnants may be preventing a clean install. There are also various add-ons (be wary of them) that can make a huge difference. Firfox is free, so you get what you pay for. Firefox has a nasty habit of wanting to update fairly often compared to other browsers. Not a major thing to do, but it can be a pain if midway thru some important message or transaction.

Are you using Windows 8 ? Unless using a touch screen gadget I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Not clued up on Ebay - is it maybe one of those sites not designed to run with Chrome ? I'd be surprised if it's the case with EBay, but many sites are only tested to run on a couple of browsers. No idea where, but there is some discussion on which is the best browser to use for CR4.

If you've not already got it, I do commend (suitable disclaimers) the Iobit freeware. Don't blame me if you get burned, but I have had good experience with it.

No. I have a Chromebook. The great thing about it is that it never slows down or crashes like Windows. But there's a list of things that demote it to a mere terminal rather than an independent computer.

It is nice to see such a posting and I have the following difficulty ( or problem)

I want to directly paste in the text what I am typing as Reply - to some of the postings in CR4. When I try to paste the paste option does not appear even though I copy properly from some other folder.

I want to suggest that "ALL THE GOOD ANSWERS" made by the CR4 MEMBERS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE. Presently only 10 nos. of GOOD ANSWERS are available, even though there are more than 10 GOOD ANSWERS as seen fro the image on the left side, in the CR4 POSTING. These GOOD ANSWERS are highly educative, The soft ware and the memory storage capacity should be suitably re-designed/re-altered.

ANONYMOUS POSTERS also furnish good replies. But instead of ANONYMOUS POSTER, THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED in diffferent way or they should be enrolled as a member.

I think it may take some time to finalise the over-all decision. In the mean time if anything comes to my mind I will again post here.

CR4 SHOULD BE THE MODEL FOR FUTURE GENERATION.

I take this oppertunity to wish all CR4 MEMBERS a merry Christmas and HAPPY NEW YEAR in advance.

Thanks,
