Did you ever wonder how some members got to have icons in their profile that display next to their posts? These graphics are called badges, and they represent user group membership.
User groups are a way to identify other users with similar interests. In the future, user groups might have their own private forums. One example of this is the CR4 Fans' Break Room and its private off-topic discussion area.
You can join user groups to represent your own interests. Head on over to the User Group Directory to see the options. Most of the user groups have membership types to choose from. So if you become a member of one of the Engineering Fields, you can choose a discipline-specific membership type.
Let's say you want to join the Engineering Fields group as an Aerospace Engineer. Here's how:
First, click on the Engineering Fields link.
Then click the link to join the group (shown below).

Next, select your membership type, scroll to the bottom and hit Submit:

After joining, you will see a link asking you to update your membership message. Click it to proceed:

You can create your own membership title and add a message (perhaps a summary of your experience or your areas of interest). Leave the checkbox to show the membership type in your profile checked. This will display the badge!
