Goodyear's Concept Might Change How You Think About Auto Tires

Posted March 26, 2015 11:58 AM by wagman262

Car tires are usually ho-hum. But Kevin Harrigan writes at Engineering360 that a lot of media buzz at this year's Vienna Auto Show was around concept tires "rolled out" by Goodyear. One concept tire generates electricity; enough so that a parked vehicle could recharge its own depleted battery from juice supplied by the tires. A second concept tire would automatically adjust to road conditions, helping autonomous vehicles navigate changing terrain and weather. Have a read and let me know your thoughts!

Amazing! If the efficiency gets any higher, drivers will have to stop periodically to drain off some of the accumulated gasoline...

The 2016 Mustang GT350 reportedly requires $500 tires,,,,$2G's for a set of tires....+ tax and balancing and mounting, who knows how high they can go....? Takes special wheels too...add special valve stems and pressure monitoring and pretty soon you'll be able to get a good used car for the price of wheels and tires on the new cars....probably buy 3 or 4 cavaliers!!

Great, we get to look forward to blowing thousands instead of hundreds on tires in the future.

Perhaps with the improved handling, they'll have improved wear characteristics, so one set of tires will last longer than the car they're mounted on. That way when you trade up, you either get the remaining value of the supertires added to the trade-in value of your old car, or you get the supertires transferred over to the new vehicle.

(As sarcastic as that sounds, there is already a precedent. Armored cars are built tough enough to last for decades, but all the weight plays three shades of merry hell on the chassis, suspension, engine and transmission. So every few years, the armored car is taken into a shop, the body is unbolted from its chassis and it gets placed on a newly manufactured chassis. With most chassis-and-body cars, the body rusts out while the chassis is still good to go for another six or seven figures on the odometer.)

Don't live in the real world do you? That's NEVER how it works - a new concept has engineering costs to re-capture plus about 500% profit so the product will not last forever. The after market sales are very desirable, and much more profitable.

Excuse me - I'm guilty of missing sarcasm. Good one.

If implemented maybe the other companies "attempting" to make an electric car can get their range up to ALMOST 100 MILES! Wow!
