Getting the Grid into the Driver's Seat

Posted August 26, 2015 8:51 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

The power industry is facing a tough dilemma when it comes to charging electric cars. On one hand, lots of consumers need to first invest in electric cars in order to justify the cost of implementing new charging system infrastructure. But, consumers aren't going to spend that money until car-charging is convenient. So how does industry best address infrastructure needs and reassure consumers in order to kick-start electric car adoption worldwide?Renewable Energy Focuslooks at some of the projects currently underway, but in this two-part series also stresses what changes need to happen first.

It appears (to me) that time required for car charging is up against time required to fill a gas tank. I guess it depends on how much energy you can push through a cable, into a battery, what time of day or night this would peak and the infrastructure to include domestic, needed to do this.

That plus several other factors...

I am still of the opinion that if you have the money, a modern hybrid is the best present alternative, one that you can also plug into the mains when the mains is available....

This can mean that for some people, trips like office to home and back, shopping and the like, can often be carried out with just electricity, but long trips become more similar to a normal gas or diesel car....the best of both worlds that is available today....

I particularly like the Mitsubishi Hybrid myself.....but I haven't won the lottery yet!!

I have to agree with you on the hybrid cars, but right now I am leaning towards the Porsche 918. Well, dreaming might be a better description.

I hope the grid won't text and drive when it finally gets in.
