Coffee-carrying Drone to the Rescue

For those commonly experiencing a mid-work-day malaise, there is now hope from above…quite literally.

Picture it. You are slumped over at your desk, looking dazed, possibly drooling and in need of something to revive you. Yet, you can’t seem to force yourself to move. Then suddenly, the clouds part, offering promise from above.

According to a patent filed by tech giant IBM, a coffee-carrying drone may soon become a reality in the workplace, carrying coffee to those in need.

Detailing how it would operate, IBM envisions technology that would enable drones to identify the "cognitive state” of employees in an office setting and, if it is determined that an office worker is struggling to stay awake, an “unspooling string” would unfurl from the drone, delivering a much-needed cup of coffee.

Although it is unclear whether IBM intends to actually develop the coffee drone, the patent includes a number of design iterations, including the delivery of coffee in a sealed bag to prevent scalding those below as well as a scenario where coffee is simply poured into a person’s mug.

Likewise, the patent suggests that IBM is considering the possibility of outfitting the drones with technology capable of detecting whether or not a person is drowsy based on pupil dilation, blood pressure and facial expressions.

Still another design suggests that the person in need of a cup of coffee could simply gesture to the drone.

Stay tuned to see if IBM’s scheme comes to fruition.

I will not be forced to drink coffee by some unseen overlord watching my eyelids for droop percentage...

It sounds like someone had a bet going on who could get the most outlandish patent.

If you're in dire need of a coffee break, a walk to the break room would probably do you as much good as the coffee. JMHO.

I think this is a symptom of the corporate patent wars to render patents a useless commodity. In this particular case it is attempting to make Amazon's drone delivery patent useless.

If it doesn't offer an optional shot of Bailey's or Kahlua, it's worthless.

Getting this past the company doctors who have been recommending office workers leave their desks every couple of hours and walk to the coffee machine to improve circulation, or the health and safety officers with concerns about people colliding with low flying drones carrying hot liquid, might make this not such a good idea. On a Greek or Roman galley where slaves are chained to their rowing benches, GREAT IDEA!!!.........not sure how big that market is at present?

Well that doctor issue could be easily solved by having the drone slowly move away from the recipient so he/she must arise and follow to continue to receive the much needed black liquid. If this proves to be an issue, as some might not arise and follow, a compatriot drone could be used to gently prod the non-complying black liquid recipient into motion.

If it is just a matter of keeping office workers awake, deploying drones to bomb desks with coffee is a little out of date. Re-purposing Strategic Defense Initiative technology you could zap workers with a lightening bolt when the number of keystrokes on their laptops dropped below 120 per minute. This may not be a serious suggestion, I just wanted to put the idea into the public domain so that I can claim prior use and IBM can't patent it.

If they would make fresh coffee it would be way better. Even if a coffee shop would use them to deliver coffee - it would be already cold when it comes to the customer. I heard that somewhere they use the drones to deliver pizzas. I have a coffee machine at home, a pretty good one and I use coffee beans instead of pre-grained coffee but sometimes I'm just too lazy to make a cup of coffee, although I want it very much. My girlfriend does the tastiest coffee in the world, she worked as a barista. She bought all the items for the coffee preparation. When she said that we need this, we need that, I believed she wants to make a bar at home.
