Series Stumper: Newsletter Challenge (July 2019)

Posted June 30, 2019 5:01 PM
Pathfinder Tags: challenge question number series

This month's IEEE GlobalSpec newsletter challenge is:

Fill in the missing numbers:

8, 18, 11, 15, 5, 4, 14, 9, 19, 1, 7, 17, 6, 16, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?

And the answer is:

10, 13, 3, 12, 2

This one is solved by realizing that the number sequence is one to 19, in alphabetical order.

I suspect that you have it there.

Alphabetic sequence of the numerals 1 to 19. there might be another algebraic result, but there seems nothing wrong with that logic.

Do we know that there are only 5 more numbers since there are 5 ?'s? Why not 10,13,30,31,32 or 10, 13, 3, 12, 20 with other numbers to follow? We know it does not go to forty because of sixth member.

I am guessing 2 3 10 12 13 - because they are missing from the sequence 1 to 19.

....but can't figure out what order.
