Since the April Challenge was solved before April even arrived, maybe an auxiliary challenge could be to formulate other riddles patterned on the one given. A few of my efforts:

If going forward I am a hat, but going backward I am a mat, what am I?

If going forward I am black and hairless, but going backward I am a rat, what am I?

If going forward I am a lid, but going backward I am a pot, what am I?

If going forward I am a harmless role in a play, but going backwards I am a trap, what am I?

If going forward I am wire insulation, but going backwards I am always wet, what am I?

Others?

More:

If going forward I am golden-tongued, but going backwards I am drab, what am I?

If going forward I am open space, but going backwards I am a room, what am I?

If going forward I am pink and healthy, and when going backwards I am smug, what am I?

If going forward I am a pry-bar, but when going backwards I transform to loot, what am I?

If going forward I am stalks of grass, but when going backwards I turn to warts, what am I?

Going forward I am but a gentle flower petal, but going backwards I am an animal! What am I?

Going forward I can be either a verb or a noun. Going backwards I am no ifs, no ands, but only buts. What am I?

Just having some fun with the original riddle concept. The answers to mine, as with the original, are found simply by reading the given word or sentence backwards. A couple are identical forward and backward ('Not a ton' and 'Lap trap guns snug part Pal') which makes them palindromes. 'Madam I'm Adam' and 'A man, a plan, a canal, Panama' are two well known palindromes.

Popular women's hat in the 20's. Scottish Tam o'Shanter style - usually simply called a tam.

TEW - Canadian Standards Association and Underwriter's Laboratories approved Thermoplastic Equipment Wire - the letters TEW are stamped on the insulation. Often used for control panel wiring.

Interesting what can be found on Challenge Questions. I'd never heard of tam before. It seems to derive from the more well known tam o' shanter, in turn taken from a variant name of Thomas used by Burns in a poem.

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama. This is a well know 'canal' palindrome (Post #18).
