Getting Dressed in the Dark (Nov. 2024 Challenge Question)

Posted October 31, 2024 12:00 AM
Pathfinder Tags: challenge question

A storm knocked the power out in your house, which meant you had no light in your closet. You'll need to get dressed near a window to see yourself.

Your unkempt closet has 3 pairs of shoes and 12 pairs of socks, which are either white or grey.

How many shoes and socks must you remove from your closet, to ensure you have a matching pair of shoes and also a matching pair of socks when you get to the window?

Answer, posted 11.25.24

You need 4 shoes and three socks to ensure you have matching sets of each.

You need 4 shoes to ensure that you have a pair. You need 3 socks to ensure that you have 2 socks the same color.

I think you could tell your shoes apart, but that's just me....

4 shoes if they're different styles. 3 if they're all the same apart from right and left. Question doesn't say.

Actually, I would only need two socks and two shoes because I keep a flashlight on my night stand.

"3 pairs of shoes and 12 pairs of socks" IMPLIES that all shoes and socks are kept in pairs.

If so, you only need to remove one pair of shoes and one pair of socks.

On the other hand, "unkempt closet" IMPLIES that they are NOT kept in pairs.

In that case, as Rixter said, you need to remove 4 shoes.

Nothing was said about how many pairs of socks are of each color, so it's possible that 11 pairs are one color and one pair is the other color. In that case, you'd need to remove 22 socks to guarantee that you have a matching pair.

No. Whatever the numbers of each colour, it's still 3 maximum. If the 2nd matches the first, you have a pair. If it doesn't, the 3rd matches either the 1st or the 2nd.

If there are 1 pair white, 11 pairs black, and you want to guarantee a white pair, you need to take all 24. If you take 23, the one left could be white.

That's how I see it anyway.

By golly, you're right! And of course so is Rixter. I stand corrected. Thanks.

The way I see it is if all the shoes are the same then you only need to remove a left and right shoe which can be discerned by the shape of the sole and if the shoes are different style then by the feel of the upper of the shoe and the sole once again only 2 need to be removed.

As for socks only 2 could be removed and if they are different then a reply to whom ever notices would be I have a pair the same at home or if you really want to get ped-antic just pick 3 socks or none and wear really long pants.
