"Nonexistent" Flying Fox Discovered

Posted September 20, 2007 3:59 PM

From National Geographic News:

This unusual species of flying fox was recently discovered in the Philippines not long after it was deemed not to exist. Jake Esselstyn, a biologist with the University of Kansas, was among a team of researchers that found the animal, a type of fruit bat, last year while surveying forest life on the island of Mindoro (see Philippines map). "When we first arrived on Mindoro, a local resident that we hired as a guide described the bat to me in great detail, and he asked me what it was called," Esselstyn said. "I politely told him that there was no such bat. I was wrong."

Couldn't this just be a isolated population of the same species. Are they genetically different enough (not phenotypically different) to make this a distinctively separate species. Just a minorly distinctive appearance doesn't make it a separate species. I do not think they have done enugh studies on the related bat species to determine if this falls into a sub group of the normal species genotypic distribution. A good test would be to try and breed them with another speciman from some where else and see if they can cross breed.

no, that's my name.

how hard would it be to not cut down the rain forests or to not pollute this amazing planet or to not build another shopping mall or not to dam up another river. I was referring to the fact that we humans aren't always able to leave "well enough"alone. jack

Hi Del, I agree with you, we should leave them alone! Why is it that we humans have to interfere with nature all the time? Spencer.

Just a thought... We humans are part of nature so isn't what we do natural? Whether we "interfere" or don't "interfere" is mute. Unless... we are held to some higher code of conduct, to be good stewards of what has been entrusted to us. Just a thought.

Sure ; " I want more !", " I want the blue cup", " you never listen", "It's my turn", " it's not fair", "It's my turn", " vermin had too many goes", ...... Ooops. I got chucked out of spelling lessons at school !

ps- Chianti (and Fava beans) ? I'd like my owl flambed at the table on a silver platter, but spit-roasted sounds good ( stops it flying away). I just don't go for those frozen ready-owl meals. The feathers get done before the rest of it.

The question is not whether they CAN interbreed, but whether they DO interbreed in natural environment. Lions and tigers CAN interbreed, and have in circuses [ligers]; that does not make them the same species.

Something seemingly as insignificant as a behavioral change, some members of a species becoming nocturnal while the rest are diurnal would make interbreeding unlikely and would lead to speciation.

"Something seemingly as insignificant as a behavioral change,"

I don't believe there is no one on this forum that thinks a behavioral change is something insignificant. Unless it is to survive, (evolve).

Shoot them, Sample them, Eat them, I wonder how many of the worlds wonders have gone under extinct because some Neanderthal with a firearm was getting them for a photograph?

That chimp with a human like aspect has never been seen again since the bloke who saw one shot it.

This training we have had since toddler hood needs to be reviewed, are we all meant to Dominate the world or could we just possibly live with the wonderful diversity that just comes along naturally?

I Dun Know the answer, I do no longer carry a gun for any reason though. Would if I lived in the new New Orleans though

I resemble that remark.

As for nonexistent fox. Delicious with orchid butter and DoDo eggs, a favorite breakfast.

Now I am late for a meeting with Sasquatch. It seems he has another family of aliens squatting on his property. They keeping scaring the unicorn.

Harumph!
