Keeping Track of Kids

Posted September 21, 2007 8:06 AM by Sharkles

Keeping track of children in schools has never been simple. In the UK, a novel approach uses GPS tracking systems incorporated into school uniforms. Most children are willing to go along with the idea, but parents are concerned as the cost of these new uniforms can be prohibitive.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wireless Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wireless Technology today.

Im just curious how many children have been abducted from UK schools? I understand that most children are ubducted by family members so the tracking device would not be so efective. How hard would it be to track one person with 2000 signals going off?

I have three pre-teen children and a level 2 sex offender living right next door. As far as I am concerned the GPS device in the clothing may not be effective enough. I was thinking more on the line of a sub or intra-dermal chip. That way if the child is removed from the clothing they can still be tracked. A horrible thought I know but I would rather be realistic and keep my children safe. This could be a dterrant to some that would kidnap children as well. Something similar to Lojack that only the Doctor and parents would know exactly where the chip was placed on the child. Eye opening just the fact that we have to have discussions like this. Last year a 7 year old girl was abducted from her garage on the way to her bus stop in the next town over. A parent's worst nightmare. I would do anything to prevent this.

If only that was a viable option I would have executed it by now. Pun intended

I personally would like to see the laws changed drastically. Rather than allow them to live in towns with children, put all sex offenders in their own little prison, and let them offend each other.

I'm don't know if you're familiar with California, but we have a very interesting process going on...

In the middle of the state, there is an institution called Atascadero State Hospital. This institution is literally the size of a large town (And I have no idea why it was created in the first place!). Anyway, it is well known that sex offenders have a ridiculous recidivism rate. So, after an offender serves his time, but is guaranteed to commit another crime, they are warehoused in Atascadero as a patient for an indeterminate amount of time - meaning for life!

They complain, but currently to deaf ears. They have more freedom than in jail, but never get back to the public, where they will act just as they would. Good for me, good for you, and good for kids!

How many of these "willing" children are actually aware of what is going on with this and are not just going to be told to agree with it?

And the intentions here are of the best, at least were the parents are concerned. If this craze takes flight how long will it be before the government trys to mandate that everyone should have a tracking device? This whole thing is just a little too Big Brother-ish for me.

Keeping track of kids is a challenge, but are biometrics better than cell phones?

Since GPS is a relatively "passive" transceiver system, apart from the issue of children "privacy", it should become an excellent real-time tracking system, due to it's less than 50 meter accuracy range.

Hey, if it's good enough for pets...

Your kids are getting tattoos! What difference would it make for them to dig the chip out and stick it on some mutt.

It must be something in the air.

The business with Iran perhaps?

I've been wracking my brains (Or at least what's left of it) trying to figure out what's that something in the air.

What say you?

Pound an aluminum spike into your child's skull. It shouldn't cause any damage unless it's removed. That should stop the little beggars!

What about letting them run on leashes. Each family measures the length of their leashes until a mean is found. Once determined, all leashes are set as such and there is where the school is built.

On another tact... It is well known that child molesters have a very high rate of recidivism. Most really can't be rehabilitated. California found an option. In the middle of the state you have Ataskadero State Hospital. It's literally the size of a town!!! Sex offenders are placed there after serving their sentences, as patients and are never let back into the public community. The patients are unhappy, but they're given as much freedom as the hospital provides. However, they never get back into the community to commit their crimes again.

The rare weird screwup does occur... for example, near my apartment complex is a half-way house for many sex offenders. My apartment complex is loaded with children. go figure!

Well, you can't reform them cold-turkey, they need some minimal adjustment range

Oh, I get it.... child molesters around, as a limiting-factor to control the degree of child vagrancy... It's so crazy it might just work

Or, alternatively, lobotomise child molesters to harmlessly follow kids around, wearing GPS kits...

Of course, this does not address the fact that most child disappearances are a result of run-aways and being snagged by a parent in a divorce.
