Love, Sex, and Marriage with Robot Inevitable, Said AI Researcher

Posted October 16, 2007 4:57 PM

From Neatorama:

Artificial intelligence researcher David Levy at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands has bold predictions: "My forecast is that around 2050, the state of Massachusetts will be the first jurisdiction to legalize marriages with robots." Levy had just completed his Ph.D. thesis on the subject of human-robot relationship, sex, and marriage: In his thesis, "Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners," Levy conjectures that robots will become so human-like in appearance, function and personality that many people will fall in love with them, have sex with them and even marry them. "It may sound a little weird, but it isn't," Levy said. "Love and sex with robots are inevitable." Levy argues that psychologists have identified roughly a dozen basic reasons why people fall in love, "and almost all of them could apply to human-robot relationships. For instance, one thing that prompts people to fall in love are similarities in personality and knowledge, and all of this is programmable. Another reason people are more likely to fall in love is if they know the other person likes them, and that's programmable too."

A lot of interesting questions come to mind here.

1. If someone marries more than one robot, is he/she guilty of polygamy?

2. If people cheat on their robotic spouses with humans or even other robots, are they guilty of infidelity?

3. If a man divorces his robotic wife, is she entitled to claim alimony?

4. If he customized his robotic wife to look like a celebrity, can the celebrity sue him for violating her image rights?

5. Is a fight between two robotic women over their bigamous mutual husband still called a catfight?

In the movie "I, Robot", Will Smith noted that the District Attorney defined murder as one human being killing another human being. I wonder what Isaac Asimov would have made of this.

Clearly, I was born about 50 years too early. Imagine, a multiple personality partner where most of the personalities weren't completely insane but designed just for the pleasure of variety. I'm sure the image use thing could be worked out with licensing fees.

If the price is right it could stem overpopulation, but if it goes too far we might end up with an underpopulation problem. Maybe if they knew they had competition the real people would behave better towards their partners. Really darling, you can be replaced!

Maybe you can write your autobiography. You can call it "I married a Stepford wife", or maybe,"Confessions of a Stepford wife's husband".

Is that based on the number of batteries she goes through? And what the heck is that humming noise when she's taking a bath?

We've already been replaced, and don't know it. Just ask her girlfriend.
