Worst Casemod Ever: Ubuntubox Cardboard PC

Posted December 20, 2007 8:33 AM

From technabob:

This computer has to be the biggest hunk of junk I've ever seen. Cobbled together from cardboard, red duct tape and embellished with a Sharpie, the UbuntuBox V1.0 certainly won't win any awards for build quality. According to the builder, the guts of the old Pentium 3 tower are being used to power this Ubuntu Linux computer. He claims that the system really does work, and despite its cardboard construction, it has yet to spontaneously burst into flames. I'd be happy to send him a lighter and some accelerant if that helps him achieve his goal faster. [via flickr] cardboard, computer, funny, junk, paper, pc, ubuntushare this story

Thanks for the article.

Apart from keeping out children or an enquiring family cat, the happy owner may have just as well left all the parts out in the open, where natural radiation and convection would cool the hardware more efficiently.

An interesting concept, and perhaps the happy owner lives in a cardboard house, or has shares in a cardboard-making factory...

You are right. Disposable computers are the way to go. Why not just pick one up at the news agents and when it's cracked or other wise disabled get a new one. I can see a future here. Instead of buying a broad spread you pick up a cardboard computer. Like buying a lottery ticket (for price comparison). It would make a difference in sound if you hit the bastard like I do some times. I don't care what they look like as long as they keep promising what I need, and I can upgrade faster than they demand. Were are we? Ky.

So, here we see that the problem is with the PC and not the operating system (Windows vs LINUX)?

We all know the old adage "Ya get what ya pay for." I've seen generic PCs on the market with extreme numbers at really low prices. Guess how long these things are going to last... ZAP!

One of the most neglected component of most PCs is the power supply. I can say with certainty that if you get the high-priced power supply, you'll reduce your problems by half. Also, that high priced power supply is much much kinder to the rest of the components.

In the end, flaky power supplies make for a flaky computer.

This makes the construction techniques used in the OLPC really high tech.
