Perforations improve LEDs

Posted January 07, 2008 8:01 AM

From The Engineer:

Researchers in Scotland are developing new technology that could replace the household light bulb within three years. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are said to be several times more energy efficient than standard light bulbs but their structure and material traps light and reduces brightness, which makes them unsuitable as a domestic light source.

Uh Oh, and just after many folks spent their hard-earned cash on the "energy-saving" mini fluorescent tube lamps.

These fluorescent "power saving" lamps are "cheaper to use" so the story went, but when the cost of manufacture, and cost of waste disposal is taken into account, the small savings on the electric bill, proved rather overshadowed.

Meanwhile perhaps LED or even better organic LED technology may prove more energy-saving, with long life and less disposal troubles.

As always: we shall see....

He'd probably think: "Now how can I show prior research that allows me to challenge the patent...?"

More to the point, what would THIS guy think?
