Green light for hybrid research

Posted January 17, 2008 9:33 AM

From BBC News | Science/Nature | UK Edition:

Regulators have given scientists the green light to create human-animal embryos for research. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority granted permission after a consultation showed the public were "at ease" with the idea. Experts said it was vital for research into life-threatening diseases. Two centres, King's College London and Newcastle University, will now be able to begin their work under one-year research licences. Any other centres wishing to do similar work will have to apply to the HFEA for permission, which will make a decision on a case by case basis. Hybrids Scientists want to create hybrid embryos by merging human cells with animal eggs in a bid to extract stem cells. The embryos would then be destroyed within 14 days. The cells form the basic building blocks of the body and have the potential to become any tissue, making them essential for research. At the moment, scientists have to rely on human eggs left over from fertility treatment, but they are in short supply and are not always good quality. Critics say they are repulsed by the idea and there must be no creation of an animal-human hybrid. They say it is tampering with nature and is unethical. It is already illegal to implant human-animal embryos in the womb or bring them to term.

Humanity needs to grow up and spend all war money on studying nature and the universe. We are running out of time. Superstition and disrespect for the truth has placed society on the verge of almost total collapse.

Utterly disgusting... nothing like twisting the awesome gifts of God into another avenue for the perpetual advancement of self.

Look to the 'Veritatis Splendor' and 'Humanae Vitae'... please.

A "Good Answer" tick for Guest above, thank you.

This sort of thing is absolutely insane, and no good will ever come of it.

The cross-species barrier was designed by a loving Creator God, to prevent such happenings.

If it succeeds, expect an army of "chimpanzee-men" incredibly strong, with no morals whatsoever, to arrive to take you away as a protester, or even as a "plain unenhanced" person, to be "Processed" into whatever the State Corporation, or United Nations, wish.

The Nazis tried this sort of experimental surgery on, and conditioning of people years ago, furthered by Ivan Petrovich Pavlov and others under the direct control of Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (Joe Stalin).

Time will prove that I'm right.

Kind Regards....

"Those who are unwilling to learn from history, are bound to repeat it."

Mixing genes across species barriers is morally wrong, ethically wrong and flat insane.

What we do not know is legions, and anyone of those can come back and bite in the rear. All the assurances, that it is just research is just that, hardly worth the paper written on. The published justification for the program is that it just might help with various illnesses. Yeah, and at the end of every rainbow got to, just got to be the pot of gold too! My good contacts among microbiologists don't see sense in it either. And once such a gene is out in general populace, the genie is out of the bottle.

There are are recent experiences flat contradicting assurances given by the supporters. In the US presently in taxpayer supported stemcell research about a dozen embryonic lines permitted (the cat was out of the bag, so let them...). Well, some time later it was discovered, that the supporting mouse cells in the same cellculture did, what everybody "knew" cannot be done, and contaminated them with viruses and other genetic detritus.

A gene from a cold water jellyfish causes fluorescing. very useful for scientist as a tag to show under a microscope, which of their experiment worked and where. Guess what? Just saw pet rabbit for sale presented on TV, That glows green under UV light. If you know anything about rabbit proliferation, that gene is out there by now.

Even plant recombinant DNA research - that had a pretty good track record - is being reevaluated lately due unforseen consequences. Look up Bt crop (Burgdorferi Thuringiensis). Looked good at the beginning, but later was found, that it crosses species barriers. Just one of those things everybody knew for sure it cannot happen. It could, and it did.

There are plenty of things most of us could do, but do not due to selfimposed restraints and having grownup responsibilities. The promoters of this lunacy fail on both.
