Porsche's Winter Fantasy Camp, Part 2

Posted January 18, 2008 10:55 AM

From Crave: The gadget blog:

The Porsche Camp4 racetrack is perched more than 9,000 feet above sea level. So if the sight of the new Porsche 911 Carrera S to which I was assigned didn't take my breath away, the elevation certainly did. But armed with water, aspirin, and special acupressure wristbands to prevent motion sickness, I was ready to start my engine. The one-day program was divided into four specific exercises: The skid pad, an obstacle-avoidance course, a slalom course, and the full track. The skid pad was a large circle cut into the snow. The goal wasn't to just drive around it, but rather, to drift around it sideways

Bit expensive for my tastes, and being a six-footer plus I probably could not either fit behind the wheel, nor sit upright without bending my neck to clear the roof.

Model A or early Hupmobiles are the bees knees for the tall guys.

Kind Regards....

I know what you are saying.

I once flew to Germany with a business friend to check out this 2nd hand machine he wanted to buy.

We landed on this small airport and in the distance came this lovely Porsche C4. I was drooling.

We forgot to tell him that I am 6'5" and my friend was 6' but made Nellie the elephant look slim in the waist.

He went red in the face and said he should have thought better and took the Merc or something but we just laughed. I sat in the front with my knees next to my ears and my friend in the back sideways. It must have been hilarious for the bystanders to see us packed up like that.

We were dropped off back ot the airport in a Merc 500 something, pure bliss.

Many people 6'3" sit comfortably into the 911 even with a helmet (for track use). 6'5" may be pushing the limit. If you get one without the sunroof, chances are you could do 6'5" (without bending). It also depends on where your height is (torso or legs).

Yes, they are expensive, but I see people spending $40K to $50K for an SUV and the 911 seems like an absolute bargain when you factor the performance advantage and fun. I have owned trucks, and driven my share of SUVs and I can't see what people see in them that makes it worth spending that kind of money. Add the poor fuel economy to the list and it must really hurt.

Sparky:

I am 6'-3" and own a '73 Porsche 914, not as roomy as the Carrera S and without the creature comforts as well. But I fit surprisingly comfortably in my little pocket rocket.

Porsche...There is NO substitute!

We had a "large Station Wagon" once, a Holden HJ model.

Even so, I had to remove the front Bench Seat, and drill new mounting holes, some 6 inches towards the rear, and refit the seat into the new position.

It's not just the height which is a problem, it is the length of the limbs, and the location of joints on them.

Kind Regards....
