Jetstream: Car That Flies; Literally

Posted January 21, 2008 7:57 AM

From Born Rich:

With revolutionary advancements in auto engineering, difference between an on road and an aerial ride has reduced in a great way, at least in speed and comfort. However, riding the Jetstream air propelled car with its unique design and body, which is finished with the identical techniques as homebuilt aircraft such as those Rutan aircraft of the 70's, is by no means lesser than riding a plane. The one-off custom build car runs on gasoline and get its power from 400 cubic inch Chevy small block, driving through a 2 to 1 reduction drive to a six blade, 54″ propeller. Though, the fiberglass and urethane body is as light as two people can easily lift the car, but its propeller generate awfully loud noise. If you really wanna enjoy aerial pleasure on roads, the air car is up for grabs, bid starts from $10,000, at eBay.

Jetstream: Car That Flies; Literally

....Except it doesn't fly, its a fan-propelled car (similar to the early fan propelled vehicles). They didn't work very well and were very noisy, they also had the misfortune of no blade housing to protect the public from the blades or to prevent injury when the vehicle lost a blade (which they commonly did apparently). This at least looks like they may have fixed the blade issue, but still is about as practical and roadworthy as a water electrolysis fueled car.

I was thinking of the early French convertible single-seater with the propeller in the rear. It had no guard for the blade at!

Jack, I agree with you. This is a noisy inefficient way to travel.

Emphasise the noise, as I see the journalist writer did.

You woud require grade 5 earmuffs, a crash helmet, and nerves of steel.

Kind Regards....

Ever been around an air boat? Talk about Noisy! There's a reason you always see the operators wearing full noise cancelling earmuffs. The car in question ought to be great fun to follow in snow, down gravel roads, downtown traffic.....

Here in Florida, you can get essentially the same thing, minus the fancy fiberglas body shell, for half that money. Only they aren't road worthy, as they are airBOATS. Come to think of it, they don't say this thing is at all street legal, do they? The propeller tips are supersonic - talk about LOUD! Any guesses as to why it's a 'one-off'?
