Bionic Vision

Posted January 21, 2008 8:27 AM

From scenta RSS Feed - STEM:

Superhuman vision may be possible with circuited contact lenses. Engineers at the University of Washington (UW) have for the first time produced a biologically safe contact lens with a technology that could help the visually impaired, vehicle operators or may even be of interest to video game companies. A prototype uses a new technique to develop contact lenses with electronic circuits and infrared light to generate a virtual display. "Looking through a completed lens, you would see what the display is generating superimposed on the world outside," said Babak Parviz, a UW assistant professor of electrical engineering. "This is a very small step toward that goal, but I think it's extremely promising."

"...see what the display is generating superimposed on the world outside..."

I DO hope some effort will be made to keep this out of the eyes (or hands) of people who don't do so well seeing the world outside to start with. I'm not talking here about the visually impaired, but rather the perceptually impaired. Visualize, if you will, (yes, pun intended) the person driving to work on the Interstate in rush (?) hour traffic, talking on the cell phone, preparing their face (shaving, make-up, whatever), and/or eating their breakfast, and seeing stock quotes superimposed on the rear of your vehicle ahead of them... Their top stock drops seven points. DUCK!!!
