7 Super-Sized (And Somewhat Insane) Soviet Projects

From mental_floss Blog:

The Soviet Union decided the best way to show up the West was to build the biggest version of any given object. The following are just seven of the largest examples. Here's number 5. The World's Largest Hydrofoil The world's largest hydrofoil wasn't really a hydrofoil at all. In fact, it was one of a series of unique machines called "ground effect" vehicles built by the Soviet Union beginning in the 1960s. The Soviets had a monopoly on this fascinating technology, relying on a little-known principle of physics—the "ground effect"—in which a dense cushion of air hugging the ground can provide more lift to a vehicle than air at higher altitudes. Hovering about 3-12 feet above the ground, these vehicles resemble Luke Skywalker's levitating craft from Star Wars, and are far more fuel-efficient than airplanes, helicopters, hydrofoils, or cars. And at 58 feet, the largest of these, the "Caspian Sea Monster" was given its distinctive name after CIA analysts saw it at the Caspian port of Baku in photos taken by spy satellites. The craft traveled at speeds of up to 240 mph, had a swiveling nose cone for cargo loading, and could carry up to as many as 150 passengers. [Photo courtesy of Wikipedia]

When a dictator is at the helm, he generally gets what he wants, even if it is at the expense of other people's lives, health and welfare.

That shows nothing has changed, either in Russia, or elsewhere.

As for the item which <"....which weighed in at about 100 megatons...."> no such thing, and evidently the article was never properly proof-read, or the gross error would have been noted and emended.

Kind Regards....

Rather biased journalism...
You could find similar ludicrous endeavours from any big nation...

And plenty of big public works where many workers died.

I'm not pro Russian... just anti propaganda/biased journalism.

At a low level of big that didn't go too well... the UK's Millenium dome... HH's Spruce Goose.... maybe there's a whole thread here?

Hi Del.

I agree with you, there has never been a time when one nation or another has not used propaganda such as this. Japan has always tried to make the smallest of things, America and Russia have always since the 1930s competed against each other in largness. Then there is Hitlers "Third Reich", they tried to out compete everybody in all things.

But what about us, as you said we have the Dome (crap) and not forgetting St Pancras station, this was for many years the worlds largest single span roof, and still is Europes!

As for the Russians ultra large "Ground effect" plane or "Akranoplan" I have seen this plane in action, it is truly impressive. Now suddenly this idea has caught on in the west and the far east, albiet many yeas later.

So to those people who want to ridicule Russia or any other nation for that matter, I ask them to look closely at their own country???

Spencer.

A more interesting Russian contribution to the world (IMHO) is their work on Bacteriophages in the 1920's. Only now is the West taking an interest, as the number of viable antibiotics decreases. We may well need the head start their scientists have given us.

It's pretty obscene for any nation to build 'show-off' structures when they have people living in deprivation, but all nations are guilty of this. I wonder what they'll do with the unsightly homeless people when we host the Olympics. It's no more than one big junket.

PMSL !

Somebody should warn Stinky Pete. His cardboard box has probably been earmarked for destruction. Now I think of it, he didn't post in your battery contest. Odd, considering the number of cans that must be around him. You don't think they already got him do you ?

Other nations might have built ludicrous public projects, but the US and UK and most western nations didn't have that habit of shooting all the workers afterwards. I tend to think the number of workers who died during the construction of the the Golden Gate Bridge can be compared very favorably to the number dead after that stupid canal mentioned in the story. And, dopey though he may be, I doubt that George Bush will dynamite St Patricks in Manhatten to build his Presidential Library....

A fascinating example of conspicuous consumption. But wait! That's a CAPITALIST trait...there's something other than logs in the woodpile here...

The following are a fascinating example of conspicuous consumption for the super wealthy the Bugatti Gemini WIG Yacht.

and for the not so rich the Bugatti Islander WIG

Hello Gannet

<"Typical technology flow from the Military and then to the Wealthy.">

You would not expect anything else, would you?

The Military are the Police force of the Wealthy.

Kind Regards....

Fascinating! And obviously overconspicuous... Any idea if there's a connection to the original Bugatti automobile marque?

So , we are admitting superiority of Russian technology?

I thought so .

Forget not the suprise the master Race had when seeing the Red Army " untermensch" driving T-34 tanks over terrain, not possible for German tanks to traverse, less ground unit pressure. Not to mention brilliance of adapting aluminum block, V-12 aircraft diesel engine to tank propulsion, pathetic german tanks,( when not Czech or French captured tanks in use), always underpowered for their weight.

Thank the Russian sacrifice in blood and treasure, or Tea Partiers would be having their"tea parties" in German Concentration camp.
