The Truth About Tire Pressure Monitoring!

Posted January 27, 2008 8:16 AM

As of 2008, all new vehicles in the U.S. must integrate standard systems that automatically monitor a car's tire pressure. However, don't be fooled! Two different approaches are in use: one of which integrates MEMS sensors into the tires and is more accurate than the other, which guesses a tire's inflation level based on a tire's rotation and relative speed.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from MEMS Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to MEMS Technology today.

To All, The other thing that those buying the monitoring systems are not told is that a change of tire pressure of as little as 3 POUNDS will set off the warning light and most of the time driving your vehicle changes the tire pressure. Also the monitors must be REPLACED EVERY TIME YOU GET YOUR TIRES ROTATED!!! The LEAST expensive location I have found charges $22.00 per tire.

Think about that for the convenience of not having to use a tire pressure gauge!!

The tire-rotation problem is of issue when the tires are moved from one position to another, and only affects pressure measurement using the "indirect" method. The US government has done a very poor job of defining the necessary specifications, even if it recognizes the problems. That is why so many inadequate solutions abound and you find quick and dirty solutions. No one wants to pay for TPMS because no one sees the value. If this was a market driven technology, better customer-driven specs may result.

This is absolutely nuts in adding costs to the vehicle instead of simply investing in a little driver training. The system is only as good as it's weakest link! You can't make the car any safer than the idiot behind the wheel.

This is what happens when people trust the government more than they do each other.

Calc0cat: what is very frustrating to me is that the average drivers know less and less about the very machines they operate!!

Most do not know any thing past where to put the bloody fuel hose!!!

The world is buying into the "hydrogen electric fuel cell" as the savior of the automobile, the ender of the supposed energy crisis and the destroyer of all the evils of the world!!

Unless you are a multi-millionaire or one of the power elite you will not be able to afford the damn things as the price ranges from $385,000 to $495,000 each.

There are at least two methods right now "off the shelf" sort to speak that we could use today to nearly eliminate all petroleum use.

Calic0cat: I apologize for my out burst. I simply am frustrated by the headblindness of so many obviously intelligent people even on this web site.
