Open Wireless Network Coming?

Posted February 23, 2008 7:45 AM

The FCC got a $4.7 billion offer for a block of frequencies in the 700 MHz band, known as the "C" block. Accordingly, the anonymous bidder has to let any devices and any applications on the frequencies in this band, according to FCC rules. The FCC expects the move to boost broadband delivery competition and foster creativeness in the wireless arena. Do you think this plan will work?

I'm not sure how open anything necessarily will be, but it is curious how recently I have had discussions with some of my peers who have been in the thick of the broadband over electrical lines process and the correlations and implications of much of the TV networks completely switching to HD broadcasts, etc.

It would open up big gaps in bandwith, and it appears to me that it will spawn a new level of public wireless systems that I plan to be involved in.

Will this plan work?

Sounds like the children asking are we there yet? Does the query benefit the subject or not? It is that we are going that way already; a boost or and eddy in the stream? Either way it's a win-win scenario (:

We are headed there whether we want to or not. The question is who will capitalize on it first. Eventually our entire existence will employ and/or rely on wireless systems, and the implications and applications of such need to be thought of well in advance.

Is not that the same band that most wireless controled toys and phones use?
