Tired and Dusty or Wired Books

Posted January 26, 2008 8:24 AM

The miracles of technology never seem to cease. Now, readers who enjoy a good book can simply turn on their wireless reading device and view pages of any book they order. The device, which boasts an electronic-paper display, doesn't depend on wireless hotspots to download books, as it uses a high speed data network. International newspapers, blogs, and books all download quickly from any location that has cell service. Would you prefer your old dusty books or this handy device that retails for only $399 and is currently sold out? Would you use wireless to read product specs and manuals?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wireless Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wireless Technology today.

"Now, readers who enjoy a good book..."

At last a real application the electronic-paper display. Load all of your technical reference works on it to have your material at the tip of a stylus or ???

Reading a book on it would be too much strain as it is little more that a little PC display.

There is no eye strain. The product is the Amazon Kindle. The device is not an LCD display but actually half black and white balls that rotate to form an on/off pixel state. It really is like looking at a page from a book. Because the screen does not need to be back lit or always on, the battery life is very long.

I am as much a gadget nut as anybody, but I wonder if plain paper might not be cheaper than the air time charged by my cell phone provider!

The display mechanism is intriguing, though. I would like to hear more about that.
